Portimão birth center closes earlier than expected due to lack of doctors

The birth/maternity ward of Faro "is fully operational"

The birth ward in Portimão has been closed since 21:00 pm on Tuesday, December 27th, and will remain closed until 9:00 am on January 2nd, 2023. The lack of doctors meant that the maternity ward closed even earlier than expected .

According to the plan, released by the National Health Service (SNS), the delivery block in Portimão was only supposed to close from the 30th of January onwards.

But, in a note sent to the press this Wednesday, December 28, the Centro Hospitalar Universitário do Algarve (CHUA) reveals that the maternity has been closed since 21:00 yesterday.

According to the CHUA, in Portimão, however, the «Urgency of Obstetrics (up to 22 weeks of pregnancy) and Urgency of Gynecology» is assured.

The birth/maternity ward of Faro «is in full operation, thus guaranteeing a regional response», in the opinion of the CHUA.

Returning to Portimão, between 9:00 am on Thursday, the 29th, and 9:00 am on the 2nd, due to the absence of a specialist pediatrician scheduled to provide any service, the care «in pediatric emergencies will be carried out by non-specialist doctors, operating as a Basic Emergency Service».

Specialist care will only be ensured in Faro.

«These constraints are due to the great lack/limitation of human resources, a situation in which the CHUA has been working to resolve, reinforcing services with the hiring of new professionals in 2023», he concludes.
