Algarve and Andalusia remain united in defending the high-speed railway between Faro and Seville

Officials from both regions reaffirmed their objective during a meeting of the Alentejo – Algarve – Andalusia Euroregion (EuroAAA) council

The high-speed rail connection between Seville, Huelva and Faro and the improvement of cross-border connections between Andalusia and the Algarve were defended by António Pina, president of the Association of Municipalities of the Algarve, and by Juan Manuel Moreno, president of the Junta de Andalucia, at a meeting of the council of the Euroregion Alentejo – Algarve – Andalucia ( EuroAAA) that took place yesterday, Monday, the 12th.

During the session, António Pina «underlined the commitment of the Municipalities of the Algarve to the improvement of cross-border connections, in particular in the defense of the Seville – Huelva – Faro and its connection to Lisbon, but also the Alcoutim-Sanlúcar de Guadiana International Bridge», revealed the Commission for Coordination and Regional Development (CCDR) of the Algarve.

Juan Manuel Moreno, for his part, «affirmed the need for the three regions to join efforts together with their respective Governments to achieve the necessary investments for the high-speed rail connection, taking the AVE from Seville to Faro, underlining that this Atlantic railway corridor is vital for the economic and social growth of the Euroregion, as well as for cohesion with the rest of the Peninsula and with Europe».

 

 

In that same session, Ceia da Silva, president of the CCDR of Alentejo, was sworn in as the head of the Euroregion for two years.

The President of the Board of Andalusia took the opportunity to take stock of the mandate ahead of EuroAAA, which ended on Monday, highlighting "the approval of the new Cross-border Cooperation Agreement, in the context of the Multiannual Financial Framework 2021-2027 (POCTEP), the bets on smart specialization and growth through investments in innovation, cutting-edge technology and digitalization in fundamental areas such as the environment, clean and renewable energies, blue economy, prevention and fight against forest fires or competitive and sustainable infrastructures, with projects that surpass the 109 million euros».

In addition to Miguel Pina and José Apolinário, president of the Algarve CCDR, the Algarve delegation also included the vice-presidents of this entity, José António Pacheco and Elsa Cordeiro, and Osvaldo Gonçalves and Paulo Paulino, president and vice-president of the Alcoutim Chamber , respectively.
