Albufeira congratulates world deep sea fishing champion

“It is a huge honor for all of us to have a world champion in Albufeira”, said José Carlos Rolo

Last Wednesday, December 7th, the Municipality of Albufeira awarded the athlete Alexandre Dionísio, world champion in Boat Fishing.

In a symbolic ceremony, the Albufeira native received a plaque with the Clock Tower, a pennant and a framed diploma.

«It is a huge honor for all of us to have a world champion in Albufeira», said the Mayor José Carlos Rolo.

Alexandre Dionísio was crowned world champion of Boat Fishing in the summer of this year, in a championship that took place in Albufeira during the last week of September, with more than 200 athletes from 14 countries.

Since he was 10 years old, he went with his family of fishermen to the high seas, and, at the age of 17, he managed to save money to buy his first boat.

In 1997, it became part of world fishing competitions on the high seas, adding second and third places in several championships held in Italy, Spain, Montenegro, Ireland, England and Portugal. Furthermore, Alexandre Dionísio was at the origin of the Clube de Pesca e Náutica de Albufeira, founded on October 15, 1986 and, 12 years later (1998), he created the deep sea fishing section at this club.

«It is not a “top” modality, like football, but it has thousands of fans», says the Albufeira native, stressing that «it is a sport that requires experience, technique and a lot of patience».

In a note, the municipality explains that the training involves assembling the fishing gear and checking the behavior of the fish, which determines the size of the fishing lines and the type of bait to use, and in championships only the use of shrimp and white clams.

This training session usually lasts five hours, with three 15-minute intervals so that the position of the “gears” can be changed, as “one of the demands of championships is fishing in four different places on the boat”.

Alexandre Dionísio thanked the recognition, as well as the support given to the fishing championships, saying that the help he provides to fishing on board «is very important, as well as all the collaboration he offers to the entities, as this ensures the practice of the modality and the prestige that this confers on Albufeira, taking the name of Albufeira even further».

José Carlos Rolo reinforced his position of admiration and satisfaction for the achievements of Alexandre Dionísio.

«It is a huge honor for all of us to have a world champion in Albufeira», he said, adding that «from now on, institutional offers of recognition also include a framed diploma, where gratitude and honor are expressed».
