Algarve fishermen had more income in 2022, until October 31, compared to the same period in 2021, despite having sold less fish, thanks to a 34% increase in the average price of fish traded at auctions in the region.

«This increase was also transversal to the different segments of the national fishing fleet, with greater expression in the siege (+44%), but also in multipurpose vessels (+14%) and in trawling (+6%)», according to Docapesca.

The global value of fish traded at auctions in the Algarve reached 54,6 million euros, “representing an increase of 2% compared to 2021, the year in which the historical maximum sales were recorded”.

“The amount transacted registered a decrease of 24%, reaching 12,2 thousand tons”, added the public company.

«These positive numbers demonstrate a trend towards improving fishermen's income combined with a permanent sustainable management of resources», he concludes.

At a national level, there was also an increase in the average sales price, albeit lower than in the Algarve, of 14,9%, compared to 2021.

Here, too, the growth «was transversal to the different segments of the national fishing fleet, with greater expression in trawlers (+18,5%), but also in multipurpose vessels (+15,7%) and seine vessels (+ 14,9%)».

«Among the most abundant species, horse mackerel recorded an average price increase of 4% compared to 2021. However, since 2017, the average price of this species, which is the object of appreciation and promotion campaigns developed by Docapesca, has already increased by 61%», according to the company.

The global value of fish traded at auction reached 211,6 million euros, “representing an increase of 1,2% compared to 2021, the year in which the highest sales record was recorded. The amount transacted registered a decrease of 11,9%, reaching 86,3 thousand tons».
