PAN filed an injunction today to request immediate suspension of the destruction of Alagoas Brancas

This morning there was also a march and human protest against the destruction of Alagoas Brancas

The People-Animals-Nature (PAN) filed an injunction today with the Administrative and Tax Court of Loulé, requesting the immediate suspension of the destruction of Alagoas Brancas, in the municipality of Lagoa.

The PAN stresses, in a statement, that it is “a place that is home to one of the only wetlands in the region and that, for a few weeks now, has been destroyed with the approval of the Municipality of Lagoa to make way for a commercial enterprise. ».

In the injunction filed by the PAN, the suspension of the work is required, as it is likely to cause and is already effectively causing “serious and irreparable damage to environmental, historical, landscape and identity values, protected by current law”.

At stake, according to that party, is the destruction of environmental, floristic and faunal values, which still constitute a relevant historical, cultural, landscape and identity value.

“We don't understand how the municipality of Lagoa, contrary to what studies, experts and even the Algarve Regional Development and Coordination Commission itself, gave its approval to destroy this green stronghold in favor of a commercial enterprise, which can and it must be built elsewhere”, criticizes PAN spokesperson Inês de Sousa Real.

“It is a pity that, at this time and with all the scientific and climate evidence, not all of our political leaders are committed to preserving natural values and fighting the climate crisis. In this particular case, we are facing an environmental attack with the green light of the municipality, which not only should have negotiated with the promoter of the work so that another location could be found, but also should have fought for the classification of Alagoas Brancas as a protected area. ”, he added.

“On the part of the PAN, we will make use of all the instruments provided by law in the name of the conservation of Alagoas Brancas”, said Inês de Sousa Real.

This action comes in addition to a complaint formalized by the PAN with the Public Prosecutor's Office, requiring the latter to act in defense of diffuse interests, as provided for in the legislation in force.

According to a study carried out in 2019, financed by the Environmental Fund, 114 species of birds were identified in Alagoas Brancas alone, highlighting the presence of at least 1% of the national caiman-breeding population in this location (porphyry porphyry) and 1% of the regional population (Mediterranean, Black Sea and West Africa) of Ibis Preta (Plegadis falcinellus).

There are also species with an unfavorable conservation status on the site, such as the striated turtle, classified as "Endangered", and the Gecko, classified as "Vulnerable", which "are being buried alive as a result of of the earthworks in progress at the site", concludes the PAN.

This morning there was also a march and human protest against the destruction of Alagoas Brancas, with a few dozen people protesting in front of the Lagoa City Council and also next to the place where the works are continuing.
