Lagos: Chamber issues a favorable opinion on the disaggregation of the parishes of Bensafrim and Barão de S. João

A civic movement was born within the population that mobilized with the aim of restoring the extinct parishes

The Lagos City Council unanimously approved a favorable opinion on the disaggregation of the Parishes of Bensafrim and Barão de São João, «subscribing, therefore, to the pretensions and popular will expressed by the respective populations and municipal bodies of the Union of Parishes».

The aggregation of the parishes of Bensafrim and Barão de S. João was carried out in 2013, within the scope of the administrative reorganization of the territory, «against the will of the population and its representative municipal bodies, having deserved, from the first moment, strong opposition», points out the Chamber of Lagos.

The possibility of correcting this situation would eventually be conferred by the new legal regime for the creation, modification and extinction of parishes (approved by Law No. in which it is proven that there has been a manifest and exceptional error with prejudice to the populations.

Enthusiastic about this prospect, a civic movement was born within the population that mobilized with the aim of restoring the extinct parishes.

Distinct historical and socio-cultural identities, in addition to a disproportionate territorial area, are the main arguments presented to support the proposal for the disaggregation of the two parishes, which will now be the object of appreciation in the Municipal Assembly of Lagos, which meets on the 28th of November. , in Barão de São João, with this item on the agenda.

«After completing these stages of the process, the final decision will be up to the Assembly of the Republic, with a strong expectation that the popular will of the communities will be met and prevail», concludes the municipality.
