Lagoa congratulates Tiago Cantigas for winning the Wheelchair Handball World and European Championships

With 32 years and professional GNR, Tiago Cantigas is a right winger

The athlete from Lagos, Tiago Cantigas, was crowned, yesterday, in Leiria, World and European Wheelchair Handball Champion, by helping the selection of the quinas to win the final of the test, in a game disputed with the selection of Netherlands.

Aged 32 and GNR by profession, Tiago Cantigas is a right winger, has played for three seasons at Casa do Povo in São Bartolomeu de Messines and already has several international caps for the Portugal national team.

“I want to congratulate Tiago Cantigas for his journey in the national team, which had its highest point yesterday with the conquest of the World and European Championships. It is a great source of pride for Lagoa and for the people of Lagoa to see him win these trophies”, said Luís Encarnação, mayor of Lagoa.

In the Championship, which took place in Leiria, from the 18th to the 20th of November, the Portuguese team aimed to achieve the much-desired title of world champion and champion of Europe.

In a difficult but not impossible task, the national team had to overcome selections such as the Netherlands, Romania and India, having finished the group stage in first place, which gave direct access to the semi-finals, where they again defeated India.

In the final, they beat the Netherlands 18-10.
