Algarve Food Bank campaign increases collection to 140 tons

In the Algarve, the campaign took place in 143 commercial areas and in two warehouses, Faro and Portimão

The Algarve Food Bank collected, on Saturday and Sunday, around 140 tonnes of food in stores, 26 tonnes more than last May.

At national level, the various Food Banks against Hunger managed to collect 2086 tons of food, which represents a 24% increase in relation to the campaign carried out in the same period of 2021.

The second food collection campaign of the year took place in around two thousand supermarkets across the country, involving close to 40 thousand volunteers from the 21 Food Banks spread across the country.

In the Algarve, the campaign took place in 143 commercial areas and in two warehouses, Faro and Portimão.

According to the Algarve Food Bank, "the collected food will begin to be distributed, starting this coming week, to 126 social solidarity institutions" throughout the region.

Around 23.987 people with proven food shortages will receive baskets or prepared meals.

Nuno Cabrita Alves, president of the Food Bank of the Algarve, emphasizes that «the union of all the volunteers allowed the realization of another solidary campaign with enormous success».

The person in charge was «very satisfied with the results achieved», in a campaign that involves tasks such as «collection in commercial establishments, transport, weighing and separation of products».

«Thank you to all the volunteers and to all the Algarve people who donated products Together, we will continue to feed hope», added Nuno Cabrita Alves.

At national level, the Portuguese Federation of Food Banks Against Hunger underlined “the increased support needs faced by many Portuguese families, whose incomes are increasingly pressured due to the generalized increase in prices and interest rates”.

The President of the Republic, who visited the Food Bank Against Hunger in Lisbon on Saturday, witnessed the “unique solidarity” of the Portuguese in the campaign, recalling the “very high number” of needy people.

“I would remind you that this campaign is aimed at almost half a million Portuguese, four hundred and something thousand, out of 10 million is a very, very high number”, said Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, speaking to journalists at the end of his visit.

The President of the Republic stressed that those who donated food know that they are helping "a lot of people, a very significant number of people who are in food poverty, or at risk of food poverty", very needy and in need.
