Students at Escola EB 2,3 in Paderne planted several carob and pomegranate trees

The Municipality of Albufeira celebrated the Autochthonous Forest Day this Wednesday, November 23rd, with the planting of several carob and pomegranate trees outside the EB 2,3 School in Paderne.

The event, which is now in its second consecutive year, was attended by the mayor of Albufeira, councilwoman Cláudia Guedelha, responsible for Education, Vítor Ferraz, director of the Ferreiras School Grouping, and some technicians of the Municipality.

This year, the commemoration of the date falls within the scope of the Project Aspiring to Geopark Algarvensis and the Biennium Program for Climate Action in Portuguese Geoparks and counted with the collaboration of the Institute for the Conservation of Nature and Forests (ICNF) that donated the trees that were planted on the school grounds.

José Carlos Rolo, mayor of Albufeira, took the opportunity to mention that «the initiative falls within the scope of the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development of the United Nations, which essentially aims to adopt urgent measures to combat the climate changes that are increasingly being felt».

During the initiative, the president questioned the children about the native trees in the region, explained the planting process and the care to be taken for the trees to grow healthy, emphasizing the concern with climate change, the lack of water and the preservation of ecosystems.

Following the initiative, the mayor launches an appeal for all citizens to play an active role in the preservation and conservation of the environment, «protecting and restoring in a sustainable way the natural heritage of the county».

The Day of the Autochthonous Forest was established with the aim of promoting the importance of natural forests, as well as their conservation, namely the species that are part of the natural heritage.
