PSD wants to know if the Portimão maternity hospital closes or not

Social Democrats demand clarification from the Government

PSD deputies elected by the Algarve want the Government to clarify whether or not the maternity hospital at Hospital de Portimão will close, after recent statements by a regional official of the Ordem dos Médicos, who pointed to the closure of this service at the Centro Hospitalar Universitário do Algarve. .

According to the social democrats Luís Gomes, Rui Cristina and Ofélia Ramos, the president of the Southern Regional Council of the Ordem dos Médicos «left up the possibility of definitively closing the Portimão birthing block, with the service being provided by the hospital of Faro, more than 70km away', in recent statements.

The deputies of the main opposition party, who say they were taken by surprise, now want to know if the Minister of Health admits “the possible closure of the maternity unit of the Hospitalar Unit of Portimão of the Centro Hospitalar Universitário do Algarve” or if, on the contrary, guarantees «that the maternity unit of the Portimão Hospital Unit will not close in the future»

For PSD parliamentarians, «it is not with the closure of a maternity hospital that the glaring lack of obstetricians can be overcome. It is urgent that the Government take the necessary measures to guarantee the attraction and retention of doctors and other health professionals, investing in their careers, improving working conditions and reconfiguring the remuneration structure».
