Portimão marks the Month of Persons of Age in October

There are many activities throughout the month of October

A round table on the theme “Voluntariad@ in the Third Age”, which will take place on the 6th, in the descabeço room of the Museum of Portimão, continues the celebrations of the Month of the Elderly Person, which the Municipality promotes throughout October.

Four elderly people from Portimão who play relevant roles in the municipality will participate in the round table: Georgete Klisiaris, a volunteer at the Senior Social Center of Aldeia das Sobreiras, at CHUA – Hospital de Portimão and at the Municipal Kennel, Joaquim Magalhães, president of GRATO – Support Group for Drug Addicts, Fátima Arez, volunteer at the Flor Amiga Association and the Elos de Esperança Association, and João Reis, president of the Barlavento Algarve Blood Donor Association.

One of the main topics of the debate, moderated by the plastic artist Maria Seruya, responsible for the “Velhas Bonitonas” project, will be the role that active seniors can play in favor of the community, regardless of their age, namely in terms of volunteering.

In Portimão, there is the municipal platform Voluntariado Portimão, a meeting space for people who voluntarily make themselves available to provide actions inherent to active and solidary citizenship, also integrating this network of wills with institutions that develop projects for local development.

The celebrations began yesterday, 1st, International Day of the Elderly, with a boat trip from Clube Naval de Portimão, offered by the company Bué de Sucesso and Yacht Manguito, in which senior people participated.

Combating discrimination against the elderly

On October 6th and 7th, with sessions at 10:00 am and 11:00 am, the Manuel Teixeira Gomes Municipal Library will address the issue of Alzheimer's from the children's point of view, through the reading of a story adapted from the book "Memories of the Heart", of Catarina Malheiro, having as target public the schools and private institutions of social solidarity in the municipality. The initiative has free registration, but mandatory, via email [email protected]

To awaken the approximation and strengthening of ties between different generations, a vital aspect for a truly cohesive, diverse and inclusive society, on the 18th, a workshop will be held on the design of intergenerational projects.

The workshop starts at 14:00 pm at the TEMPO concert café – Teatro Municipal de Portimão and will provide trainees with specific and innovative skills in the preparation of intergenerational initiatives, in order to combat the age ghettos of the communities.

The training, promoted by Associação Cabelos Brancos, is free and open to entities working in this area and to all interested parties, and the respective registration must be made until October 16 to the email [email protected]

Also promoted by Associação Cabelos Brancos, there will be a certified training course on ageism, that is, age discrimination and prejudice against the elderly, which will take place in several daily online sessions until the beginning of November.

Aimed at animators of senior living centers and community centers of the municipality and residential structures for the elderly in the municipality, this training aims to identify and contextualize the problem of ageism, recognize where it manifests itself and what its contexts and impact, in addition to teach individual, social and institutional empowerment strategies.

Life with no expiration date

The founder of the project “Velhas Bonitonas”, whose motto is “We dare to be who we are without complexes or guilt”, Maria Seruya will exhibit a set of paintings, on display from October 5th to 24th at the Portimão Municipal Market and at the TEMPO concert café. , which show how female beauty has no age limits and conveys an idea of empowerment of older women.

Also within the scope of the actions planned for this month, the Municipality of Portimão joined the campaign “Life without expiration dates”, promoted by the Associação Cabelos Brancos to raise awareness of the population in the fight against ageism and encourage the empowerment of the aging process. in all life cycles.

In this sense, sustainable bags and t-shirts with activist messages on age discrimination will be distributed throughout the month to all participants in the programmed activities, which constitute the first collection of the Cabelos Brancos brand, in a limited edition that can be purchased by all people who wish to become ambassadors for the association and contribute to changing a new narrative about aging in all life cycles.

healthy physical activity

Since healthy, guided, regular and targeted physical activity is essential for the well-being of the senior population, the program also includes several open classes in pilates, senior karate and water aerobics, within the scope of the Exercise and Health Program, scheduled for sports complexes in Boavista, Portimão and Mexilhoeira Grande and with prior registration.

Also in terms of physical activity, the Alvor Community Center will host a dancing matinee on October 26, starting at 15:30 pm, with musical entertainment by Humberto Silva, encouraging fraternization between seniors.

Throughout the month, the trees of Jardim das Águas Vivas are dressed in “hugs”, as a result of the crochet work carried out by the users of the Centro de Convívio da Aldeia das Sobreiras, ending the celebrations on the 31st of October, with the usual tribute to centenarians from Portimonense, whose schedule will be announced in due course.

This initiative is part of the project “Distributing love for the municipality”, which emerged within the context of the pandemic period in which the population, particularly the elderly, was deprived of affection.

In this sense, the construction of almost one hundred hugs began, which from now on decorate the Jardim das Águas Livres, in a symbolic message of affection addressed to the community.

In addition to this activity, the “Correio dos Affections” projects are currently underway in the municipality, as a result of a partnership established between the municipality and the Lar da Criança de Portimão, and “Gestos de amor”, together with the Centro Hospitalar Universitário do Porto. Algarve – Hospital de Portimão, both promoted by the Senior Living Centers of Portimão and Aldeia das Sobreiras.
