"I will dedicate the best of my attention to ensuring that there is a full public response in the Algarve to all the needs of cancer patients", said Manuel Pizarro, Minister of Health, at the Parliamentary Health Commission, which took place this Wednesday, 19 of October.
The statements by the head of the Health portfolio came yesterday, the day the PSD Algarve accused the Centro Hospitalar Universitário do Algarve (CHUA) of sending cancer patients to radiosurgery treatments in Seville.
«I am very sensitive to the issue of patient comfort, it is enough to have a diagnosis of an oncological disease. But I would say that I will dedicate the best of my attention to ensuring that there is a full public response in the Algarve to all the needs of cancer patients, because what cannot happen is for the public sector to be captured by the interest of a private, which is define by yourself the price at which you provide a particular care», stressed Manuel Pizarro in the Parliamentary Committee.
Em statements ao Sul Informação, Hora Guerreiro, CHUA's clinical director, confirmed that the radiosurgery treatments are being carried out in Seville, stating that it is about "a single patient journey" and that the Spanish unit, which won the competition, guarantees "excellent conditions for patients».
At the Parliamentary Commission, the minister also highlighted that the tender to build the Central Hospital of the Algarve, in Public Private Partnership (PPP), should be launched in 2023.
«Any decision that the Government would take today on the launch of a PPP for the clinical management of a hospital would take four to five years to materialize», the minister had already mentioned.
«A different thing is the use of PPPs for the construction and maintenance of hospital infrastructures and, then, I confirm that we maintain that intention, not only in relation to East Lisbon, but in the new project of the Hospital Central do Algarve, in relation to which I hope that, during the year 2023, we can have fully prepared the functional program that will embody the specifications that will allow us to launch this tender process", said Manuel Pizarro.
