Olhão: Maritime Police seize octopus and bivalves and 14 fishing gear in Ria Formosa

Fishing gear banned in Ria Formosa was in the crosshairs

The Olhão Maritime Police seized this Sunday about 22 kilos of different fish, as well as 14 fishing gear, during an inspection aimed at the practice of fishing in Ria Formosa.

The action began by detecting holes and buckets, whose use is prohibited in the Ria Formosa, as well as other fishing gear without proper signage and identification.

As a precautionary measure, 14 fishing gears were seized, as well as about 10 kilos of octopus that, being alive, were returned to the waters of the estuary.

During this action, elements of the Maritime Police also inspected a shellfish gatherer in full activity of catching bivalves, without proper licensing and using a hand hook, the use of which is also prohibited in Ria Formosa.

The respective report was prepared, and the elements of the Maritime Police seized, as a precautionary measure, the fishing gear used, as well as about 12 kilos of bivalves, which were returned to their natural habitat.

In this action, two elements of the local Command of the Maritime Police of Olhão participated, supported by a vessel.
