Tavira will dedicate the month of October to seniors and will promote a program of cultural, educational, health and well-being activities with the elderly in mind.
With this initiative, the Senior Age Group (GIS), within the scope of the Social Network of Tavira, wants to «increase the participation of the senior population in the life of the community and provide a livelier month, in a perspective of valuing active ageing», according to the Tavira Chamber.
Today, October 1st, International Day of the Elderly (01.10), in an initiative of Associação Em Contacto Tavira, Grupo de Cantares Lado a Lado, performed in the morning at the Municipal Market and returns to show at night, at the São Francisco Fair .
The morning of the 12th is dedicated to promoting health, physical activity and well-being with initiatives at the Dr. Eduardo Mansinho, which aim to raise awareness of active and healthy aging.
On the afternoon of the 21st, at Mercado da Ribeira, it will be possible to watch the play “À grande e à portuguesa”, a comedy performed by the Farrapo d'Arte Theater Company.
On the 26th and 27th, between 10 am and 00 pm, the GNR Territorial Detachment of Tavira hosts the training meeting “Violence against the elderly and the provision of care”.
The “Mês Sénior” program ends with a musical matinee with Luís Guilherme, at Mercado da Ribeira, between 14:30 pm and 16:30 pm.
In addition, during the month, the entities that work with the senior population, promote a set of actions of a diversified nature through the holding of “Open Days”.
The Senior Age Group comprises the following entities: Municipality of Tavira, Social Security Institute, Public Security Police, National Republican Guard, Algarve Regional Health Administration, Portuguese Victim Support Association, Tavira Humanitarian Center of the Portuguese Red Cross, Santo Estêvão Social Center, Nossa Senhora das Dores Social Center of Santa Catarina, Parish Center of Cachopo, Casa do Povo da Luz de Tavira, Irmandade da Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Tavira, Social Center of Santa Maria, Associação Âncora – Community Center of Santa Luzia, “O Pontão” Social Solidarity Association of Conceição de Tavira and the In Contact Association of Tavira.
This year, the Parish Council of Tavira and the Cooperativa Casa do Amparo were invited to take part in the planning of the “Senior Month”.
