«Resilient museums in times of disruption» will be the theme for an international meeting in Loulé

International Meeting of Museums takes place again in Portugal after 22 years

Loulé is preparing to host the annual conference of NEMO – Network of European Museums Organizations, between 9 and 11 October, within the scope of the International Meeting of Museums, whose motto is «Innovation starts from within: resilient museums in times of of disruption".

In the year in which it celebrates 30 years of existence, in a joint organization with the Municipal Museum of Loulé and the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage, members of this network, representatives of museum institutions and professionals linked to the sector of museums and cultural heritage throughout Europe meet to talk about the present and debate the future of these spaces of memory, culture and knowledge, making an immersive approach that will include presentations, workshops, sharing experiences and ideas and visiting the territory and museum spaces in the county.

«Innovation starts from within: Resilient museums in times of disruption» is the motto of this event, which will feature speakers from countries such as the Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, Germany, Austria, Norway, Spain, Switzerland or Ukraine and Portugal, around two hundred people.

The organization intends, in these three days, to explore how museums can become more innovative, agile and flexible in a rapidly changing world.

Thus, those responsible for institutions linked to the museum sector and who are members of NEMO are invited to participate in a meeting of directors, to take place at Palácio Gama Lobo, at the start of the event, on Sunday morning, 9.

The afternoon is filled with a visit to the exhibition “Com os Pés na Terra e as Mãos no Mar – 6000 years of Quarteira History”, in the old Lota de Quarteira, a cultural tour through the village of Alte, and a visit to the headquarters of the Loulé Municipal Museum, the Islamic Baths and the Barreto Manor House and the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Conceição.

The Cineteatro Louletano is the reception room for the international conference, with work opening on the 10th, Monday, with a welcome session by the NEMO representative, David Vuillaume, the Secretary of State for Culture Isabel Cordeiro, and Mayor Vítor Aleixo.

«The following are the presentations that will provide joint reflection and debate on the current panorama of museums, leading participants to dive into the different approaches and the need for a paradigm shift in which the bet on the innovative character presents itself as the way forward. for the future of museums", says the municipality.

A panel dedicated to the response of these institutions in times of crisis is also planned, with testimonies, for example, from Joana Sousa Monteiro, who will speak about the «explosion of creative energy» during the pandemic period, or from Vasyl Rozhko, about the challenges that faced with the war in Ukraine and the emergency to protect the patrimonial heritage of this country.

That night, Quarteira will also celebrate the 30th anniversary of this network dedicated to Museums in Europe.

The last day's program, October 11, will feature more presentations, but also interactive moments with the speakers, such as an interview with Alessandra Garriboldi, from Fondazione Fitzcarraldo, and a participatory session.

Thematic working groups are also planned dedicated to issues such as digital, climate change and sustainability, legislative matters or the sphere of public administration in the management of museums and also their educational role.

On the afternoon of this last day, the organization will provide a visit to the city, to discover the heritage beauties of Loulé. The activities end with the annual meeting of the NEMO network, exclusive to members, and the final reception at the Municipal Museum of Loulé, which will have the support of the MOI project! Museum of Impact.

This event, held for the second time in Portugal (the first was in Lisbon, in 2000), has the collaboration of the Municipality of Loulé, through the Municipal Museum of Loulé, and the Directorate-General for Cultural Heritage.

NEMO, a network of museums in Europe, was founded in 1992 as an independent network of national museum organizations representing the museum community of the Council of Europe member states. Together, NEMO members represent more than 30 museums in 40 European countries.
