José Alberto Alegria is new Honorary Member of the Order of Architects

Recognizing the career and contribution of the architect Alegria

The architect José Alberto Alegria was awarded as an Honorary Member of the Ordem dos Arquitetos (OA), in an official ceremony, held at the national headquarters of the OA, in Lisbon, on the 27th of October.

The attribution of this status was proposed by the Regional Section of the Order in the Algarve, «considering the tradition of attributing, within the framework of national celebrations of the World Day of Architecture, the Status of Honorary Membership to natural or legal persons due to important contributions within the scope of the statutory objectives of the Order of Architects».

José Alberto Alegria (OA member no. 4357) was born in 1947 in Oliveira de Azeméis, but lived in the Algarve for decades. He has a degree in Architecture from the Faculty of Architecture of Lisbon, and in Economics from ISCEF – Instituto Superior de Ciências Económicas e Financeiras of Lisbon.

Pioneer in Portugal, since the 80s, of the renovation of geo-architecture and modern architectures in local materials, it has sought a path of continuities between Traditional Architecture and Contemporary Architecture.

He has designed multiple public and private works, many of them associated with the Architectural Heritage of Mediterranean Influence and is regularly invited to direct Seminars at Faculties and other Cultural Institutions in different countries.

He has designed permanent or temporary scenography for the presentation, interpretation and dissemination of Material and Intangible Heritage, in a logic of valuing their continuities.

Alongside his professional work, José Alberto Alegria has been Honorary Consul of the Kingdom of Morocco in the Algarve since 2001.

It has promoted the twinning of some Algarve and Moroccan locations, increasing Euro-African cultural exchange.

He was decorated by the King of Morocco Mohammed VI, in 2015, for his decisive role in the heritage enrichment of his projects, marked by an architectural line strongly linked to the Arab tradition.
