Gambelas and Alvor hospitals now have a Breast Unit

Service launched to mark the month “Pink October” and highlight the importance of prevention and screening

The private hospitals in Alvor (Portimão) and Gambelas (Faro) have, as of this Monday, October 3, a Breast Unit.

According to the HPA Saúde Group, «the creation of these specialized units aims to respond to all the needs of the person who seeks this service - from prevention, through diagnosis, treatment and follow-up after it - aggregating resources and skills that guarantee a clinical organization of integrated management'.

Despite already having multidisciplinary teams working in this area for several years, the HPA says that "it thought it would be important for patients and even for internal and external referral, to create a more systematic and organized service".

The month of October «seemed to be the ideal date to publicize the units, as it corresponds to the Pink Month and the Mamamarathon, of which we are very proud main sponsors».

The HPA Breast Units integrate the valences of diagnostic imaging exams: 2D direct digital mammography, 3D tomosynthesis, Breast ultrasound, Breast Resonance, Image-guided fine needle aspiration cytology, Image-guided microbiopsy, CAT, X-ray, and general ultrasound (staging); pathological anatomy and nuclear medicine.

The treatments available are divided into medical and surgical treatments, the first of which include Chemotherapy, Hormonotherapy and Immunotherapy.

«With regard to surgery, whenever possible, the most modern minimally invasive technologies are used, involving oncoplastic surgery (with the support of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery) and in specific cases, the use of Intraoperative Radiotherapy (a recent technique that consists of perform immediate radiation in a single dose, in the same surgical procedure as the tumor extraction, avoiding radiotherapy for the following 5-6 weeks)», says the HPA.

Moreover, when diagnosed early, breast cancer can be cured in 95% of cases.
