Organ Festival kicks off with concerts in Portimão and Faro

The 4th International Organ Festival kicks off this Friday, November XNUMXth, at the Igreja Matriz de Portimão, with a concert by the organist João Santos and the participation of the Coral Adágio. The following day, another show follows, in the Cathedral of Faro. 

Starting with Portimão, after a first part where the organ and its sound recordings will shine, the highlight goes to «the interpretation of the work for mixed choir and organ, the “Stabat Mater” by Josef Rheinberger (1839-1901), opus 138 The work was written for use in the liturgy, is divided into four sections, uses some baroque rhythms and ends in a peaceful escape», says the Música XXI association.

The following day, Saturday, November 5th, João Santos performs at the organ of the Sé de Faro, sharing the concert with Coral Ossónoba directed by Nuno Sequeira Rodrigues.

Preludes, Fantasias de echo, Chaconnes and Toccatas complete the solo programme, followed by the choral participation with the interpretation of five reference works, by Elgar, Rossini, Gounod, Mozart and Saint-Saëns, where there will be no lack of «a scent of Christmas".

before heading to Faro, on Saturday morning the organist João Santos offers an Organ workshop at the Igreja Matriz de Portimão, aimed at teachers and students of keyboard instruments and ancient music, heritage scholars and other interested parties.

João Santos participated in prestigious international organ competitions and regularly performs throughout the country and abroad. He has worked with most of the national orchestras. He is the titular organist of the Leiria Cathedral.

Grupo Coral Adágio was born in Portimão, in September 1989. Today, with around 30 elements, its artistic director is maestro António Alves. His career includes national and international travel and radio and television performances.

Grupo Coral Ossónoba was founded in 1980 and has performed and organized more than 450 concerts. He has performed all over the country and internationally and participated in television programs. It has about 60 choristers and is directed by conductor Nuno Sequeira Rodrigues.

The Algarve Organ Festival 2022 has the support of the Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve and the Municipalities of Faro, Loulé, Portimão and Tavira, with support for the dissemination of the Algarve Tourism Region, with communication partners Antena 2, Sul Informação and Rua FM and with the Hotel accommodation partner Faro.
