Advisory body is composed of 329 members

The Presidency of the Committee for Coordination and Regional Development (CCDR) of the Algarve salutes Isilda Gomes, President of the Municipality of Portimão, for the election to the presidency of the Committee on Natural Resources of the Committee of the Regions of the European Union.

In a note, CCDR Algarve recalls that the Committee of the Regions is a consultative body that was created in 1994, after the entry into force of the Maastricht Treaty within the framework of the principle of subsidiarity of European construction, and which is composed of 329 members representing the regional and local authorities of the 27 Member States of the Union.

Its members meet five to six times a year in plenary in Brussels to discuss political priorities and adopt opinions on EU legislation, acting as a spokesperson for those authorities' interests to the Council and the Commission.

The Committee of the Regions has six committees, with the NAT committee responsible for agriculture, rural development and forestry, consumer protection, fisheries, civil protection and tourism.

«Composed of 100 representatives, in the current mandate the commission has as its main concerns the Rural Agenda of Europe and issues related to public health policies», concludes the Algarve Regional Development and Coordination Commission in a note.
