Philosophy club students help Portimão to mark Municipal Day for Equality

This day's program results from the signing of the Cooperation Protocol for Equality and Non-Discrimination

Portimão marks, next Monday, October 24th, the Municipal Day for Equality with a debate on this theme in the city centre, through the voice of young people from the Philosophy club of the Manuel Teixeira Gomes Secondary School. 

The program for this day, which results from the signing of the Cooperation Protocol for Equality and Non-Discrimination signed between the Municipality of Portimão and the Commission for Citizenship and Gender Equality, will start with “Our Speakers Corner”, with interventions on citizenship by students from the Manuel Teixeira Gomes School Group, which will take place from 15:00 pm at Alameda da República.

The objective is to symbolically reproduce a 'speaker's corner, in Hyde Park, in the city of London, known for being a space for public intervention, citizenship and freedom of expression.

This event is organized by the Philosophy Club of the Manuel Teixeira Gomes Secondary School, entitled the “Clube dos Filósofos Vivos”, and is extended to all interested parties, challenged to speak openly on the issue of equality.

The program will end on October 27, with the presentation at the Manuel Teixeira Gomes Municipal Library of the book “Aventureira Marielle e o dia da Fotografia”, where self-love, tolerance, inclusion and pride are written, in the name of diversity and acceptance. .

With sessions scheduled for 9:30 am, 10:30 am and 14:30 pm, the presentation is intended for schools, associations and private social solidarity institutions with intervention in children at the 1st Cycle level. via e-mail [email protected],

Since 2010, initiatives in the name of equality, inclusion and participation have been celebrated throughout the country by hundreds of organizations representing civil society and the public sphere, in a movement that the Portimão City Council has also joined in, by instituting the Municipal Day for Equality.

Furthermore, the public presentation of the 9nd Municipal Plan for Equality and Non-Discrimination is scheduled for 2 November, under the motto “Portimão, Somos Egualdade”.

Opening the program of actions foreseen in this second plan, the workshop “Rights for all Children” is scheduled for the 18th of November, at 10:00 am, at the Manuel Teixeira Gomes Library.

Directed to 1st Cycle children, the workshop will be promoted by ECOS – Cooperativa de Educação Cooperativa e Desenvolvimento, which will use various dynamic approaches, including an introduction to equality issues based on the Convention on the Rights of the Child, entitled “Rights of the Rabbit”, and creative collages with clippings of the well-known image of Caixas da Equidade. Expressions such as “equality”, “equity”, “inclusion”, “racism”, “feminism” or “freedom” will also be discussed and a cloud of words will be constructed.
