200 athletes from 23 countries head to Albufeira for the Adapted Swimming World Championship

Albufeira will receive close to 200 athletes from 23 countries for the Adapted Swimming World Championship, which takes place in this city between the 15th and 23rd of October. 

The program was presented at a press conference last Monday, 3rd, and will bring more than 400 people to the municipality, from close to 200 athletes to technical personnel, representing 23 countries: Portugal, Argentina, Albania, Brazil, Canada , Colombia, Croatia, Spain, Estonia, Slovakia, United States of America, Finland Great Britain, Ireland, Iraq, Italy, Japan, Kuwait, Mexico, Norway, New Zealand, Poland and Romania.

The Portuguese delegation is made up of 10 swimmers, two of whom are from Albufeira, three coaches and a physiotherapist.

«It is with great pleasure that we welcome this year's edition of the Adapted Swimming World Championship to Albufeira. It is an event of great international dimension, which constitutes another contribution to the valorization of our city in terms of sports tourism», stressed José Carlos Rolo, president of the Albufeira City Council.

The athletes compete from the 17th to the 22nd of October, after the training phase, in the Municipal Swimming Pools of the municipality. The tests will be broadcast via STREAMING on Natação TV.

The program also includes a social initiative that will give athletes in competition and their respective entourages the opportunity to get to know the municipality of Albufeira.

The president of the FPN also highlighted the importance of this event of «international reference» and congratulated the municipality, which, for the second time, «hosts the competition in the facilities of the Municipal Swimming Pools».

Cristiano Cabrita, vice-president of the Municipality of Albufeira and councilor responsible for Sport and Youth, assumes that «these sporting events contribute to the promotion of Albufeira as a sports center of value, not only due to the quality equipment and facilities, but also because there is a clear strategy for valuing sport and the practice of sport in the municipality».

“It should also be noted that Albufeira will apply for the European City of Sport 2026 and, clearly, these events of global reference are a long-term strategy”, informed the mayor.

José Carlos Rolo closed the press conference by stating that «the race will be a great success» and highlighting the skills of Portuguese athletes for victory.

This conference was attended by two athletes from the Algarve who have already stood out in several adapted swimming championships, Filipe
Santos and José Vieira.

The moment also featured the presentation of the Championship's mascot, Sunny, a laughing teddy bear, in shades of blue.
