São Brás de Alportel says it is investing in water efficiency, despite network losses

São Brás is among the municipalities in the country where there are higher losses in the public supply network

The Municipality of São Brás de Alportel guarantees that «water efficiency is a priority» and that it has made «very significant investments» in this area, despite the most recent data made available by the Regulatory Authority for Water and Waste Services, placing this municipality among the three in the country where there is more water wasted in the water supply pipelines.

According to the São-Brasense municipality, since 2021 «and so far, around 400 thousand euros have already been invested, a 200% increase in the budget, aimed at the acquisition of technology and equipment, monitoring and control of water losses and requalification. spaces, with a view to more effective control of losses and reduction of consumption'.

Even so, the Chamber says it is “aware of the need to intervene and combat water losses in the supply network”.

To this end, «at the beginning of this year, the existing telemanagement system was strengthened, through the acquisition and placement of new flowmeters at strategic points in the São Brasense territory», an investment «over 45 thousand euros, financed by the Recovery Plan and Resilience».

This investment aimed at «significant improvement in the measurement of flow in the water supply network and verification of possible losses in the circuit for a faster and more effective monitoring of this precious natural resource».

“The monitoring of water supply in the mountain area, where water scarcity is more evident, was provided with meters, promoting greater awareness and control for a rational use of water”, reinforced the municipality.

At the same time, interventions are being carried out in the roundabouts, which will take place in a “phased manner”. At the moment, “works are under way to profoundly change water consumption at the Almocreves and Oliveiras Roundabouts, in the Southern Variant”, an investment of around 35 euros aimed at “a drastic reduction in irrigation”.

However, the municipality approved new measures to rationalize and reduce consumption of this essential resource.

Among other actions, it was decreed “the closure of public washing facilities; the use of water from the “back wash” operations of municipal swimming pools, for washing streets, washing urban waste containers and unblocking collectors with water; the intensification of the renovation of the meter base; strengthening inspections in the fight against abusive use and waste of water; pressure reduction whenever possible; the evaluation of the tariff in force and also the reduction of the cleaning of public spaces, maintaining the minimum conditions of salubrity».

«Measures that together decisively contribute to the reduction of water consumption, in addition to raising awareness of the individual attitude in the management of this vital resource for global well-being», concluded the São Brás de Alportel Chamber.
