The residency in four Portuguese secondary schools – in Albufeira, Bragança, Macedo de Cavaleiros and Setúbal – took place during the pandemic and in virtual mode, in an exchange project organized by the General Directorate of Bilingualism and Diffusion of the Portuguese Language, of the Organization of Ibero-American States. Americans (OEI).

The resulting audiovisual piece «gathers and celebrates the work carried out during the first edition of the atelier with Spanish and Portuguese-speaking poets, who carried out (virtual) co-creation residencies with students from schools in six different countries. This exchange was also accompanied by professors, a specialized jury, the curator, coordinators of the OEI and members of different institutions”, according to the organization.

Students from the Albufeira Poente School Group worked with Soledad Vignolo, an Argentine poet.

The project was launched on May 5, 2019, within the scope of the World Portuguese Language Day, and «foresaw that poets of the Portuguese language (from member countries of the OEI and the CPLP) would do residencies, at the time, in person, at schools in Spanish-speaking countries and vice versa'.

“However, the beginning of the pandemic forced poetic residencies to become virtual. The jury selected 17 projects that could range from written poetry, to slam poetry, songs or any other form of this literary genre», according to the OEI.

The Portuguese-speaking poets selected were Liliana Alves Cerutti, of Portuguese nationality and Daniel da Purificação, of Angolan nationality, «who both did virtual poetic residencies in two schools in Colombia, as well as Mauro Hilário, Portuguese, who was with the students of a Spanish school».

Gian Pierre Codarlupo Alvarado, of Peruvian nationality, did his residency at Escola Secundária D. João II in Setúbal, Valentina Lara Suarez, of Colombian nationality, at the Gabriel Pereira School Group in Évora and Jenny Zarit Bautista Rojas, of Colombian nationality, at the School Group from Macedo de Cavaleiros.

For Ana Paula Laborinho, director of the General Directorate of Bilingualism and Diffusion of the Portuguese Language, of the OEI, this project allowed an unusual contact of students with writers unknown to them and a moment of meeting and collective celebration around the themes that have been the focus of residences: the word, cultural and linguistic diversity, intercomprehension and communication, languages in the face of the challenges of contemporary society, revealing the wealth generated in these interactions

The jury, chaired by the Secretary General of the OEI Mariano Jabonero Blanco, was composed by Maria Teresa do Carmo Soares Calçada, Commissioner of the National Reading Plan 2027 of Portugal, José Castilho Marques Neto, Consultant on books, reading and libraries in Brazil, Constanza Mekis, President of Fundación Palabra de Chile and Pep Olona, publisher and independent bookseller, specializing in poetry from Spain.
