Initiatives centered on the Municipal Tourist Information Office, in addition to a trip on a solar catamaran between the Arade River and Praia da Rocha, are the highlight of the celebrations of World Tourism Day, on 27 September, in Portimão.
This year under the motto “Rethinking Tourism”, the World Tourism Organization intends with this event to stimulate reflection on how the tourism sector is made and promoted, in order to make it more sustainable, inclusive and resilient.
In Portimão, the program includes, from 17:00, a visit by the municipal executive to the Municipal Tourist Information Office, recently opened in the renovated building of the old Lota, in the heart of the riverside area of the city, whose requalification represented a municipal investment in the order of 960 thousand euros.
On the outside of the building, until October 9, you can see the exhibition “Travel in Time”, which brings together images of the municipality of Portimão since the beginning of the XNUMXth century, which portray several emblematic and iconic places that are part of the history of evolution. of the tourist sector and were provided by the Documentation and Archive Center of the Portimão Museum and by the Portimão Tourism Association.
The exhibition is part of the curricular internship project of the Degree in Tourism, from the School of Technology and Management of the Polytechnic Institute of Beja, by the student Carolina Cruz, which has been taking place at the Tourism Unit of the Municipality of Portimão since 1 July and ends precisely on this 27 September, World Tourism Day.
In addition to this historic-cultural proposal abroad, anyone who goes to the Municipal Tourist Information Office, which will exceptionally open doors between 9:30 am and 19:00 pm, will be surprised by some offers and tastings of local products.
Solar catamaran trip
On that day, the Municipality of Portimão will provide a trip by solar catamaran on the “Sun Cat”, a vessel from the Algarve Sun Boat Trips company, departing the Arade River towards Praia da Rocha, one of the most famous national seaside resorts.
Participants will have the opportunity to appreciate, along the way, some of the most emblematic points of the city of Portimão, while focusing on the connection of this territory to the sea, in an action associated with the sustainable development of the tourist sector.
Algarve Sun Boat Trips is the first tourist company in the Algarve with a fleet of totally ecological solar boats, without any carbon emissions, allowing comfortable, silent and, above all, ecological tours.
The scheduled tours start at 14:00, 15:30, 17:00 and 18:00, next to the Municipal Tourist Information Office, this activity being free of charge, although limited to the capacity of the vessel, subject to mandatory registration via email: [email protected]
During this day, admission will be free for anyone wishing to visit the Alcalar Reception and Interpretation Center for Megalithic Monuments (10:00-13:00 and 14:00-16:30, with the last entry 30 minutes before closing) and the Portimão Museum ( 14:30-18:00, with last entry 30 minutes before closing).
