Portimão: Café Memória becomes a monthly meeting point for people with dementia

From the 10nd of September

The Café Memória project kicks off this Saturday, September 10th, in Portimão, following the protocol signed in May between the Municipality, Alzheimer Portugal and Sonae Sierra, with a view to creating a meeting space for people with disabilities in the city. memory or dementia, as well as their families and caregivers.

Café Memória will be open in a room at the Portimão Museum, always on the second Saturday of each month, between 10:30 am and 12:30 pm, with free participation and no prior registration is required.

The project begins in the month that marks the World Day of People with Alzheimer's Disease, celebrated on September 21, and will enable the sharing of experiences and mutual support.

In this place, according to the municipality, a “welcoming, reserved and safe environment will also be provided, in which interaction is facilitated and emotional support and useful information are offered, in addition to promoting the participation of people in recreational and stimulating activities, with the support of health or social action professionals, in an informal context».

«Café Memória's mission is to reduce the social isolation in which many people with dementia and their families and caregivers find themselves, contributing to the improvement of their quality of life», the municipality continues in a note.

The Café Memória project started in 2013, as a pilot project, and has been expanding its reach to various regions of the country over the last decade, in order to raise awareness of the problem of dementia and involve it in the practice of volunteering, reducing thus the stigma associated with this aspect of mental health.
