Olhão discussed mobility with experts

Mobility Week, which ended last Friday, 23 September, took several specialists to Olhão to discuss these issues.

One of them was José Gomes Mendes, former Secretary of State and a doctorate in Territorial Planning who worked at some of the most renowned universities in the world.

José Gomes Mendes attended the closing session of the Mobility Week in Olhão, where he spoke about the notion of the 15-minute city, a residential urban concept in which most daily needs can be met on foot or by bicycle from homes. residents, in 15 minutes.

The specialist discussed other mobility issues, such as public transport, and how they affect the quality of life of city dwellers.

On the occasion, councilor Ricardo Calé took the opportunity to «project the major conclusions» of the event, highlighting that «facilitating circulation for those with reduced mobility is a priority».

In more practical terms, the mayor announced that the municipality applied for a financing line of 500 thousand euros, to improve access accessibility to sidewalks and crosswalks on Avenida D. João VI.

At the same time, the two major interventions that are taking place in Olhão (Avenida 16 de Junho and Estrada de Quelfes), will now have clickable lanes on the sidewalks.

Ricardo Calé also said that the municipality applied for community funds for digital social housing – in these interventions, the neighborhoods will be equipped with noise and carbon dioxide meters, which will measure the environmental impact of the way we move in these neighborhoods. and in the city in general.

In terms of Mobility Week initiatives, for example, the Youth Driving License was highlighted, which took more than 500 children to the Quinta de Marim Auditorium to participate in the initiative promoted by DECO on compliance with traffic rules.

The Municipal Police also created the Escolinha de Trânsito Móvel, «whose success turned it into a permanent initiative, which will be taken in the future to all schools in the county», says the municipality.

The Mobility Week also served as a motto for the Municipality to launch two new traffic signs, which can already be seen in several places in the municipality, and which aim to alert drivers and pedestrians: a sign for an exclusive area dedicated to pedestrians, where drivers of bicycles are invited to get out of their vehicles and to circulate only on foot, and a sign for the joint use of vehicles and people, which aims to draw the attention of motor vehicles to the fact that they are in an area where pedestrians, children, which requires extra attention.

Finally, Ricardo Calé also highlighted the creation of the Municipal Traffic Commission and the arrival of shared electric bicycles in Olhão.

The 2023 Mobility Week has already started to be prepared.
