The construction of the new bridge to Praia de Faro has already been consigned and has been in progress since last Thursday. The project has an estimated cost of 6,5 million euros, «supported in full by the municipality, which is the owner of the work», and should be completed within about a year and a half (540 days).
The act of consignment of this work was signed in the solemn session of the Day of the City of Faro, on Wednesday, September 7th. From that moment on, the ball «was in the contractor's side».
“For all intents and purposes, the work already started on Thursday. But the contractor is still at the stage of preparing the physical work and assembly of the shipyard. The first thing they will have to do will be polls, which may not be so visible», revealed Rogério Bacalhau, Mayor of Faro, to Sul Informação.
«The Chamber will be responsible for the inspection and monitoring of the work, which have already been contracted», he added.
The consignment of the construction of the new bridge was an authentic garment for the county, on the 482nd anniversary of the elevation of Faro the city, not only because this has been a project that has long been desired and demanded by the population, but also because it was an undertaking that had many difficulties in getting out of the tender phase for the land.
The final impetus was given with the recent approval by the Municipal Assembly of Faro, of an extraordinary price review for the work on the new access bridge to Praia, which included a reinforcement of 1,5 million euros, injected by the Chamber.
In the solemn session of the City Day, Rogério Bacalhau stressed that this work “was resolved through the direct intervention and commitment of the municipal executive, with financial investment from the municipality, as otherwise it would not have progressed, as is public knowledge”.
Before reaching the execution phase, it was necessary to launch four tenders to have companies interested in carrying out the work, the first of which in November 2017, with a base price of 2,5 million euros. This and the two international public tenders that followed were deserted, despite the fact that the base price was increased with each new procedure.
The new access bridge to Praia de Faro It will be about 180 meters long, with an 11-meter wide deck, which will have two lanes for car traffic, two pedestrian walkways, one of which combines the pedestrian and cycling component. It will also allow public transport access to Praia de Faro.
The infrastructure will be located to the east of the current one, in a parallel route, which will allow the one that already exists today to remain in operation until the day the new one comes into operation.
One of the tasks of the municipality will be, moreover, "remove the old bridge and clean the site, for environmental reasons", as soon as the future connection is a reality.
On the other hand, the traffic constraints, during the construction phase, «will be very reduced», although «sometimes, some trucks may have to circulate».
