José Apolinário, president of the Algarve Regional Coordination and Development Commission (CCDR), once again defended the creation of a «high-speed connection that unites the cities of Seville, Huelva and Faro». The position was taken on the 22nd of September, during the XIV Portuguese-Spanish Cross-border Cooperation Commission, which took place in Vila Nova de Gaia.

This is not the first time that the president of the CCDR defends this work, something that also happened when the National Railway Plan was drafted, as well as the Sul Informação reported at the time.

Moreover, the Government even announced, this week, that high speed will advance…but between Lisbon and Porto. this is not the

This position of José Apolinário also supports the defense of the implementation of an investment in the railway section between Tunes and Torre Vã, as has been defended on several occasions in the region, namely in the debate on the future National Railway Plan after 2030.

For the president of CCD/Algarve, it is "urgent to move forward with the modernization projects of the railway line between Tunes and Terra Vã, an investment estimate of 253 million euros", reducing the Algarve-Lisbon train journey by 30 minutes and standardizing the speed of the train along and all the way.

Currently, on the 150 kilometers between Torre Vã and Tunes, the average speed of the train rarely exceeds 100 kilometers per hour.

«With this investment, the Intercidades trip or Alfa train between Lisbon and Faro would go to 2h30, thus being competitive with the bus mode», says CCDR/Algarve.

Moreover, in the last 30 years, the most significant investment in the Railway in the connection to the South was the modernization of the railway line between Pinhal Novo and Torre Vã, an investment of 225 million euros carried out before Euro 2004 which, only now in 2022 and 2023, 80 million euros will be added to the conclusion of the electrification and modernization of the Algarve Railway Line, carried out with the support of European Funds.
