75-year-old man dies on Quarteira beach

Man was promptly helped by a doctor who was on the beach

A 75-year-old man died this Saturday, September 17, on Quarteira beach, in Loulé, after feeling unwell in the water and going into cardiac arrest.

According to the National Maritime Authority, the alert was given at 17:30, and elements of the local Command of the Maritime Police of Faro, as well as elements of INEM and the Portuguese Red Cross.

«The victim, a 75-year-old man, was pulled out of the water by the lifeguard on duty on the beach, with the support of people, and was promptly helped by a doctor who was on site, who started resuscitation maneuvers, until upon the arrival of INEM», describes the AMN.

Even so, “after several attempts at resuscitation, it was not possible to reverse the situation, and the death was declared on the spot by the doctor from the Medical Vehicle for Emergency and Resuscitation (VMER) of INEM”.

The Public Ministry was contacted and the body was later transported by the Portuguese Red Cross to the National Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences in Faro.

The Maritime Police Psychology Office has been activated and is providing support to the victim's relatives.
