Folklore Group of Faro takes the Algarve to Argentina…and Uruguay

The program includes shows, radio interviews, lectures on the Algarve costume, music and dance workshops and meetings with other groups.

The Folklore Group of Faro is the first Portuguese group to visit Argentina, between the 3rd and 12th of September. It is a visit that is eagerly awaited by the Portuguese communities, namely by the many descendants of Algarve who live there.

The invitation came from Casa de Portugal “Virgen de Fatima”, which will host the Algarve group at its facilities in Vila Ellisa, province of Buenos Aires, with the Ethnographic Group “Raízes de Portugal” as host.

From the intense program of activities of the Folkloric Group of Faro in Argentina, there are not only several shows, but also radio interviews, lectures on Algarve attire, music and dance workshops and meetings with members of the five Portuguese-descendant folklore groups existing in the Province of Buenos Aires. .

Given the cultural interest of this visit, the Folkloric Group of Faro will be received at the City Hall of La Plata and at the residence of the Ambassador of Portugal in Buenos Aires.

A hop to Uruguay

In addition to the various tourist and cultural visits that will be offered to the members of the Group, the crossing of the widest river in the world (Rio de La Plata) from Buenos Aires to Colónia del Sacramento, in Uruguay, is also planned.

It will be the opportunity to dance in yet another country, with a show in the Central Square of the city of Colonia del Sacramento. And also get to know that colonial city that is a World Heritage Site, founded by the Portuguese in the XNUMXth century, with a guided tour and reception offered by the municipal authorities and the Portuguese community in Uruguay.

There will be four main shows of the Folkloric Group of Faro, during your stay in Argentina. «Some of them are already sold out, such is the interest aroused in the Portuguese communities», emphasize those responsible for the group.

The first show, at Casa de Portugal, is part of the celebrations of the 21st anniversary of the host group (Grupo Etográfico “Raízes de Portugal”), which will also perform, as well as Ballet Redomón and Duo Laura Pereira & Miguel Zeferino. Laura (semi-finalist of the “Voice Kids” program) and Miguel (guitar and vocals) are both members of Grupo Folclórico de Faro.

The show in Buenos Aires, which will take place in one of the theaters on the famous Avenida Corrientes, will feature the participation of “Alma Lusa”, a musical group dedicated to promoting Fado in Argentina, and which will have as guest Amabélio Pereira, who will thus perform some fados together with that group.

The Folklore Group of Faro It is the oldest in the Algarve and one of the oldest in the country, being an obligatory reference in the Algarve folklore scene.

Considered as an institution of the Algarve capital, the Folkloric Group of Faro was distinguished with the Gold Medal of the City of Faro, Medal and Diploma of Merit by the Parish Union of Faro and the Figuras Prize, awarded by the Municipal Theater of Faro, for the realization of FolkFaro – International Folklore City of Faro.

Last year, the dean of the Algarve folklore groups was honored by the Municipality of Faro with the inauguration of a sculptural ensemble entitled “O Corridinho”, which thus perpetuates the Group's name in one of the city's new roundabouts.

Ambassador of the city, region and country, Grupo Folclórico de Faro is an assiduous presence on the world's folklore stages, having participated in numerous festivals in: Spain, France, Morocco, Canada, USA, Italy, Brazil, Turkey, Switzerland, Mexico, Hungary, Czech Republic, Cyprus, Greece, Russia, Slovenia, Belgium and Poland.

This displacement of the Folkloric Group from Faro to Argentina was scheduled for 2020, ending up being successively postponed due to the pandemic. It now takes place with a delegation of 39 elements, including dancers, players and extras, eagerly awaited by the Portuguese Communities in Argentina.
