Algarve schools start to include regional products in meals

Schools in the Algarve will start to include products from the region in school meals, a commitment made at a meeting of the Intermunicipal Council of the Intermunicipal Community of the Algarve (AMAL), in conjunction with school groups. 

The initiative is part of the “Sustainable Food Systems” project, which aims to “stimulate a change in purchasing behavior, with a view to streamlining short marketing circuits and healthy consumption habits and, on the other hand, incorporating the circular economy of waste and food waste», says AMAL in a press release.

Fish (sea bass, mackerel, sea bream), fruit and vegetables, sweet potatoes and fruit from the Algarve are some of the regional products that will be introduced in school meals in the new academic year 2022/2023.

The protocol was approved by almost all the municipalities in the Algarve and provides for the implementation of meals and pilot programs that allow testing new models of supply of school cafeterias, based on short supply chains, acquisition of food products produced in IGP (Geographic Indication) quality regimes. Protected) or environmentally sustainable production systems, and by small local producers, especially holders of family farming status.
