School Sports on wheels: First bicycle kits arrive at schools

The project is based on three pillars: Teaching/learning “Knowing how to ride a bike”, Road Education and Education for Citizenship.

The project “School Sports on Wheels” (“DE on Wheels”) will reach schools at the start of this 2022/23 school year, with the start of the distribution of bicycles in all public educational establishments in the country with 2nd cycle of basic education. , in a joint initiative of the Portuguese Institute of Sport and Youth and the Ministry of Education, through the Directorate-General for Education.

The “DE on wheels” emerged in 2019 to respond to the contributions of sport and education to the National Strategy for Cyclable Active Mobility 2020-2030 (ENMAC).

According to the Ministry of Education, this strategy «is based on the urgent need to change the behavior of the school population towards sustainable and responsible mobility, namely, ensuring that all children can, in their school, learn to pedal safely, enhancing this form of active and smooth mobility, as well as promoting road citizenship in the shared and responsible use of public space».

The Ministry of Education states that it has been «creating, in a transversal way, the support conditions for the “DE on wheels” project to be developed within schools, by qualified teachers, in a regular and weekly work, with a pedagogical model of scope national level, based on a support manual for teachers and qualified technicians».

The project is based on three pillars: Teaching/learning “Knowing how to ride a bike”, Road Education and Education for Citizenship.
