International congress talks about border culture and heritage in Alcoutim and Sanlúcar

On the 23th and 24th

Border culture and heritage will be the theme of an International Congress that the town of Alcoutim and its Spanish neighbor Sanlúcar de Guadiana will host on the 23rd and 24th of September.

This event, organized by the Pablo de Olavide University, in Seville, and by the two host municipalities, with the support of the Universities of Évora and the Algarve, marks the end of a research project called “Project of R+D+I Cultural Heritage and Border Memories in the Iberian South”, held during the years 2020, 2021 and 2022.

This initiative aimed to «promote the study of border territories through cooperation work and the involvement of different research and intervention experiences in cross-border heritages», according to the Alcoutim Chamber.

«During the two days of the congress, research studies and experiences will be presented on various themes related to the border», namely: Landscapes and Cross-border Architectures; Border culture heritage: smuggling, population movements, cross-border trade, affinity and friendship; Border tourism and heritage revitalization in depopulated areas; and Border cooperation initiatives and projects: cultural dynamism and depopulation.

Closing the congress, at 19:00 pm on Saturday the 24th, the musical show “Coplas e Fado” will be promoted at Praça da República de Alcoutim, open to the populations of both villages, with singers Mónica Severino and Sérgio Rodriguez, accompanied by accordionists David Duarte and Rodrigo Maurício.
