Celebrations in honor of Nossa Senhora da Luz fill the streets of Lagoa

Party returned after two years of interregnum due to the pandemic

The religious program of the commemorations in honor of Nossa Senhora da Luz took place on the 7th and 8th of September and “completely filled the parish church of Lagoa and the streets of the city”, reveals the municipality in a statement.

The festivities returned after two years of interregnum due to the pandemic and began on the 7th with the Evening Eucharist. On the 8th, there was the Morning Eucharist, at 9:00 am, and the Solemn Eucharist, followed by the procession with the Patroness Image of Nossa Senhora da Luz, with the participation of the Philharmonic Band of Silves and the Fanfare of Agrupamento 511 de Lagoa.

The Solemn Eucharist was presided over by Cardinal Jean-Claude Hollerich, who is Archbishop of Luxembourg, President of the Commission of Episcopal Conferences of the European Union and General Rapporteur of the Synod of Bishops.

The night ended with a party, in the square of the Carlos do Carmo Municipal Auditorium, with the performance of the band GNR, which took the stage at around 22:30 pm to play the greatest hits accompanied by fireworks.

In parallel with the religious program, the culture program takes place, as part of the commemorations in honor of NS da Luz, patron saint of Lagoa, and the municipal holiday, which began on the 7th of September with the inauguration of the Centenary of the Farol de Alfanzina 1920-2020 “A century to illuminate the coast” and ended on the 10th with the ceremony for the Santos Stockler Literary Prize 2020/21 and the opening concert of the 9th International Guitar Festival of Lagoa, with Grupo Fernando Barroso Band.

«On behalf of the Municipality, I would like to thank the parish of Lagoa and all those involved in the Festas em Honor da NS da Luz for the success they were and for the way in which they took place, never forgetting, and in the first place, the Municipality's employees. How good it is to be back. To all, a thank you”, declared Luís Encarnação, president of the Municipality of Lagoa.
