CHUA marks suicide prevention month with series of activities

The initiatives form part of the campaign organized worldwide by the International Association for Suicide Prevention

The Psychiatry Service of the Centro Hospitalar Universitário do Algarve (CHUA) promotes, during the month of September and until the 10th of October, a series of activities within the scope of the campaign “September – Month of Suicide Prevention”.

According to the organization, «the objective of this initiative is to raise awareness of the issue of suicide, a relevant problem in the Algarve, as well as to promote awareness of the role that each person, municipalities and different community structures can play in suicide prevention. and mental illness'.

Therefore, «these actions in the community also aim to contribute to the reduction of the stigma associated with mental illness».

The initiatives are part of the campaign organized worldwide by the International Association for Suicide Prevention, which has the support, in Portugal, of the National Mental Health Plan, the Portuguese Society of Suicidology, the National Suicide Prevention Plan, the Local Health ACES Barlavento and the Regional Coordination of Mental Health.

The program includes initiatives that take place in several municipalities, developed by the respective Community Mental Health Teams and with the participation of other service technicians.

The initiatives started on the 1st of September with an exhibition that will be on display throughout the month in the halls of the Hospital Units of Faro and Portimão do CHUA with information on depression, suicide prevention and stigma reduction in mental illness. The exhibition ends on October 10th, the date on which the World Mental Health Day is celebrated.

Within the scope of Literacy in Mental Health, throughout the month of September, users who pass through the CHUA units will also have access to informative messages transmitted on the screens of the waiting rooms or through information leaflets made available by professionals.

As in recent years, public buildings in several municipalities in the Algarve will be illuminated with yellow light, alluding to this campaign.

Various activities will also be carried out throughout the Algarve, with a view to raising awareness of this theme, such as debates, presentations, concerts, gatherings and recreational-sports events.
