Robert Redford and Lauren Hutton, David Bowie, Andy Warhol, Muhammad Ali (the boxer once known as Cassius Clay), Jacqueline Kennedy or even Marlon Brando, in the famous whisper-to-ear scene in «The Godfather». These are just some of the iconic photos by the American Steve Schapiro, which can be seen from September 23 to December 17, at the In The Pink gallery, in Loulé.

In The Pink is the first gallery to exclusively present Schapiro's upcoming book “Andy Warhol and Friends” published by Taschen. This is also the first solo exhibition by this exceptional artist since his death earlier this year, showcasing his extraordinary work in Portugal.

Steve Schapiro (1934-2022) captured key moments in modern American history and is one of the most respected and recognized photographers of the last 60 years.

His photographs illustrate the covers of numerous magazines such as Time, Vanity Fair, Paris Match and many others. Museums and galleries have exhibited his work around the world, and Schapiro's work belongs to important public and private collections, including the The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, Smithsonian Museum, Washington DC, The J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles and High Museum of Art, Atlanta.

Born and raised in New York City in 1934, Steve Schapiro began working as a photojournalist freelancer in 1961, the beginning of the decade that he calls “the golden age of photojournalism”.

Redford and Hutton

This artist captured some of the most defining moments during a critical turning point in American history, such as Robert F. Kennedy's presidential race or the “Summer of Love” in San Francisco.

His photographs of Martin Luther King are considered one of the most famous documentation of the civil rights movement.

These striking images are not only part of the artwork selected for the exhibition, but are also included in a comprehensive collection of images in the book “Seventy Thirty” by Schapiro and Theophilus Donoghue, published by Damiani, available in the gallery.

In addition to his career as a photojournalist, Schapiro has also achieved a great reputation as a portraitist. He photographed various actors, musicians and artists such as Barbra Streisand, David Bowie and René Magritte and accompanied Muhammad Ali as well as Andy Warhol and his entourage over an extended period.

Schapiro also became recognized worldwide for his Hollywood photographs. He photographed around 400 film productions and was responsible for the campaigns for numerous of them.

He created unforgettable images for many iconic films, including the cinematic masterpieces “Taxi Driver” with Robert de Niro and Jodie Foster, directed by Martin Scorsese, “Chinatown” with Jack Nicholson and Faye Dunaway, directed by Roman Polanski, and “The Godfather ” with Marlon Brando and Al Pacino, directed by Francis Ford Coppola, which are often among the greatest films of all time and will forever remain in the memory of all movie lovers.
