Batata is the third beach in Lagos banned for bathing in recent days

Camilo and D. Ana were the other two

Moments before the ban on bathing was lifted at Praia do Camilo, in Lagos, this Wednesday, the National Maritime Authority (AMN) announced that it is now Praia da Batata, also in the same city, that is prohibited from bathing.

Since the 16th of September, there have been three beaches in Lagos where, after analyzing the water quality, the microbiological values proved to be above the reference parameters, with the water being unsuitable for bathing.

The first was Dona Ana Beach, on the 16th, having the interdiction has been lifted two days later. Yesterday, the 20th, the National Maritime Authority revealed that it was time for the Praia do Camilo also be prohibited.

The most recent ban took place this Wednesday, the 21st, at Praia da Batata.

After receiving information from the Portuguese Environment Agency, advising against going for a swim in Praia da Batata, the Regional Health Authority gave instructions for the red flag to be hoisted and warnings placed on the accesses to the beach, interdicting the going to baths.

As in the other situations, the AMN stresses that this ban will remain in place until the results of the new water quality analyzes indicate that the microbiological values are within the reference parameters.

In statements to the Sul Informação,  the mayor of Lagos said that the municipal services are “finding [whether these three cases] are related to the rains or to the WWTP and rainwater discharges”.

In either case, said Hugo Pereira, these are “situations that are resolved the next day”. Hence, the previous bans were lifted the very next day, the same is expected in the case of Praia da Batata.
