Algarve and Alentejo mark European Heritage Days with a focus on sustainability

Conferences take place between the 23rd and 25th of September

Film sessions, multidisciplinary projects, ancient music, exhibitions and contemporary music, will be some of the projects that, between the 23rd and 25th of September, can reflect on how sustainability and heritage intersect at the European Heritage Days. 

This year the days are under the theme Sustainable Heritage and their mission is to explore what measures can be taken to protect Europe's cultural heritage in the context of climate change and environmental degradation.

The focus will be on the active role of communities and heritage in the process of building a more sustainable and resilient future and, therefore, activities will be developed accordingly.

Faro 

Faro is one of the municipalities that will join the European Heritage Days on the 24th, with activities that will allow greater knowledge about the building of the Tower of Horta dos Dogs, known as the San Francisco Celeiro.

The art historian Daniel Santana and the conservator-restorator Susana Paté (both technicians at the Municipal Museum of Faro) will provide visitors with information on the historical and artistic issues of this construction, as well as on the treatment given to the figures and the tower's cladding, during a guided tour scheduled for 17:00 pm.

The route will also be enriched by theatrical and musical interventions by Grupo DoisMaisUm and Grupo Coral Ossónoba.

On that day, the program ends at 22:00 pm, and the Tower becomes the setting for a fado concert, with Luís Manhita on voice, Jorge Franco on Portuguese guitar and Manuel da Avó on viola.

 

 

Still in the county of Faro, the Regional Directorate of Algarve Culture promotes activities in the Roman Ruins of Milreu.

On the 23th of September, “The Secret Museum of Mankind”  takes place at this location at 21:30. This old photographic encyclopedia is the inspiration for João Nicolau and Mariana Ricardo, who will provide different multidisciplinary, performative expeditions, made from the encounter of photography, cinema and music. Still in the Ruínas de Milreu, the cycle “Cinema nas Ruínas” presents, on the 24th, at 21 pm, the film “A Viagem de Pedro”, by Laís Bodanzky (30), also free entry, but subject to reservations through [email protected].

Lagoa 

In Lagoa, there will be a conference at the Centro Cultural Convento de S. José, on the 23rd of September, at 18:30, as part of the Centenary Celebrations of the Farol of Alfanzina and in the European Heritage Days, entitled “Memories of Lagoa from Quinta dos Poços: from Prehistory to the Islamic”.

Portimão 

The exposure "Water is life", by the German artist Gudrun Bartels, which opens on the 23rd of September, at 18:00, at the Portimão Museum, will mark the beginning of the European Heritage Days in this city.

According to the municipality, the artist's work is heavily influenced by the sea, with its ebbs and flows, waves, wind, smells, sounds and the horizon. The favorite color is, for this reason, blue, which is reflected in a very specific visual language, where the water element predominates in the canvases and in the installation he shares in this exhibition, at the Portimão Museum.

The aesthetic and chromatic expression of his works, which combines oil and acrylic paints with chalk and pigments, is the result of this enveloping maritime nature, present in the geometry of his graphic patterns, games of colors and abstractions of the Atlantic landscape, with its different luminosities. and facets.

The exhibition will be on display at the Portimão Museum until the 13th of November and can be visited on Tuesdays, from 14:30 pm to 18:00 pm, and from Wednesday to Sunday, from 10:00 am to 18:00 pm.

 

 

In Mexilhoeira Grande,  “Our Culture Goes Out”, at 9:30 am on Saturday, 24th September, starting with a tour of the natural heritage and wildlife of the Ria de Alvor, starting at Espargueira – Quinta da Rocha, starting point. Registration is mandatory and must be done via email [email protected]

Between 16:30 pm and 23 pm, in the churchyard of the village, the arts, knowledge and flavors of Mexilhoeira Grande can be enjoyed live. There will be a display of food products, sweets and crafts.

There will be no shortage of traditional games, such as the monkey, the top, the marble, the donkey game and the apothecary's handkerchief, and visitors can also participate in various workshops, learning how to make toys from other times, or how to build in rammed earth. and the enterprise, or making sweet bread birds.

You will also be able to watch the construction of rolling carts, within the scope of the 5th Mexilhoeira Grande Bearing Cart Race, which will take place on the 1st and 2nd of October and whose registration must be made by the 30th of September, via the email carts.de [email protected]

The program also includes a cultural tour through the rural interior of the municipality of Portimão, in the Senhora do Verde area, scheduled for the afternoon of that day and with an approximate length of 4 kilometres.

Silves 

In Silves, on the 23rd, through the activity “O Dr. Heritage comes to the historic center!”, the municipality invites 1st cycle students to go and observe the existing buildings in the Historic Center of Silves.

Also on the 23rd, the activity “Heritage Detectives just for an hour” will take place, also in the Historic Center, aimed at 2nd Cycle students, challenging them to observe stone elements, aiming to define the typology, the geological time of each type of rock and the constructive and decorative aspects present in these ancient buildings.

The program continues on the 24th, with a “Night tour of the menhirs of the Valley (Fuzeiros)”, at 21:00, aimed at people over 10 years old. This will be a night tour to the megalithic monuments of Vale Fuzeiros which, according to the municipality, aims to reveal the four menhirs that, during the second half of the XNUMXth millennium BC and the first half of the following, were carved in red sandstone by the communities that inhabited the area. and that still persist today with their symbolic decorations.

Along the way, you will also visit some tombs excavated in the rock that served as a tomb for the communities that lived in this valley during the High Middle Ages.

The program will culminate on the 25th, with the activity “Historying and picnicking around the Moinho do Rodete, in Geopark territory”, between 17:00 and 20:00, where citizens are invited to walk on the riverbank, from Ponte Velha to that mill. .

Along the way, at 18:300, it will be possible to hear about its history, listen to the music of the “Moçoilas” and taste some flavors where flour will be queen.

Tavira 

In Tavira, on the 24th of September, at 10:00 am, from the Municipal Archive (Rua Jacques Pessoa), the guided tour “The left bank of Gilão: The city Beyond the Bridge”, by the art historian Marco Sousa Santos .

From Alto de Sant'Ana to Rua de São Lázaro and Porta Nova, passing through Jardim da Alagoa, Alto de São Brás and Largo do Carmo, centuries of history can be seen, materialized in old convents, churches, hermitages, palatial houses and an urban fabric marked by testimonies from different historical-artistic periods.

 

 

Also for this city, the Regional Directorate of Cultura has scheduled an activity to take place at the Municipal Market of Tavira.

This is the exhibition “Gentes do Mercado, Convivialidades by UrbanSketchers Algarve”, which can be visited until 30 September.

This is a project promoted by DRCAlg, within the scope of the promotion of the Mediterranean Diet, in partnership with Resmalhar – Cultural Association for Local Sustainability and the International Association of Paremiology, and which also has the support of the Municipality of Tavira.

Vila do Bispo

The Vila do Bispo City Council organizes a session aimed at the general public, on Sunday, September 25th, with a program that includes the presentation of the documentary film “Sagres, um Universo Submerso”, by João Rodrigues, which shows the biodiversity underwater view of the Baleeira cove, followed by the lecture entitled “Sagres, a finisterra in the center of the world”, presented by municipal archaeologist Ricardo Soares.

The session ends with a period of reflection and public discussion on solutions for sustainable enhancement of the Natural and Cultural Heritage of the Municipality of Vila do Bispo. The event has the support of Docapesca.

 

In the same municipality of Vila do Bispo, the Regional Directorate of Culture promotes activities in the Fortress of Sagres and in the Ermida de Nossa Senhora de Guadalupe.

This Friday, the 23rd, the Fortress of Sagres opens the cycle “Cinema à Hora Certa” – Best of Avanca Film Festival, in the auditorium of this monument: a project promoted by Isa Catarina Mateus, vice-president of the Portuguese Federation of Film Clubs, through the Department of Cinema and Education of the International Federation of Film Clubs.

For that day, several sessions of animated short films are planned, coming from different parts of the world, aimed at all ages, and whose objective is to make them reflect on issues related to the environment, sustainability, citizenship and also on the our relationship with the world of art.

“Cinema à Hora Certa” will take place in the auditorium of the Fortaleza de Sagres every Friday and Saturday, until October 15, with hourly sessions, with the first session scheduled for 11:00 am and the last for 16:00 pm. The maximum capacity for each session is 50 seats, with free entry for all residents of the municipality of Vila do Bispo.

Also on the 24th, at 17:00, the concert “Segredos do Barroco” will be presented at the Ermida de Nossa Senhora de Guadalupe. The project by Flautística – Associação de Flutas de Flautas do Algarve for DiVaM, has free admission but subject to reservations at [email protected].

On the last day, the 25th, the cycle “Concertos ao Entardecer” presents the Algarve singer-songwriter Mateus Verde, in the Fortaleza de Sagres, at 18:00. The project promoted by Associação ArQuente is also free of charge, but subject to reservations via email. [email protected].

In the Fortress of Sagres, until 4 October, the photo exhibition “Último Posto de Fronteira”, a work by Jorge F. Marques, is still open to the public, which talks «about the peace that some kids, who I knew when I was 11 years old, , helped me find the territory of Vila do Bispo at the last border post where I lived», a project promoted by Questão Repetida – Associação Cultural.

Vila Real de Santo António 

Here, the proposal for the 24th of September will be a workshop to create palm brooms at the Cacela Heritage Research and Information Center, former Santa Rita Primary School, from 15 pm to 00 pm, for the general public, from 18 years.

Beja

Between the 23rd and 25th of September, the museological projects underway in the city of Beja are the generic theme of the meeting, which is organized by the Rainha Dona Leonor Museum, the Regional Directorate of Culture of Alentejo and the Portuguese Association of Museology (APOM).

The meeting is promoted «with a view to encouraging dialogue and creating collaborative networks with museums and other entities in the museological universe», say the organizers.

Moura 

To mark the Days, the Museums and Historical Heritage sector of the Municipality of Moura will carry out, between the 23rd and 30th of this month, activities about the historic game of Alquerque.

During this period, the 4th grade classes in the municipality will have the opportunity to get to know Alquerque's game, visiting games still preserved in the city of Moura.

On the same occasion, the local council will offer an Alquerque game to each of the participating groups, as a way of promoting the games of yesteryear.

On the 25th, between 10:00 am and 14:30 pm, the same activities are available at Castelo de Moura, for families with children from 9 years old.
