“Our Culture Goes Out on the Street” in Mexilhoeira Grande

From the 23rd to the 25th of September, Portimão is part of the European Heritage Days

The initiative “A Nossa Cultura Sai à Rua”, centered on Mexilhoeira Grande, and the exhibition “Água é Vida”, by Gudrun Bartels, at the Portimão Museum, are the highlights of the celebrations of the European Heritage Days, in Portimão, which will take place from the 23rd to the 25th of September.

During these three days, the Museum has free admission, as well as the Center for Reception and Interpretation of Megalithic Monuments in Alcalar.

This year under the motto “Sustainable Heritage”, the Days will be marked by the eighth edition of the initiative “A Nossa Cultura Sai à Rua” in Mexilhoeira Grande”, which starts at 9:30 am on Saturday, September 24, with a tour of the natural heritage and wildlife of the Ria de Alvor, from Espargueira – Quinta da Rocha, starting point. Between 16:30 pm and 23:00 pm, the arts, knowledge and flavors of Mexilhoeira Grande can be enjoyed live in the churchyard of the village, as part of the proposals a display of food products, sweets and crafts, where some of the main rural activities in the municipality of Portimão.

There will be no shortage of traditional games, such as the monkey, the top, the marble, the donkey game and the apothecary's handkerchief, and visitors can also participate in various workshops, learning how to make toys from other times, such as mud-brick construction and the enterprise, or making sweet bread birds.

You will also be able to watch the construction of rolling carts, within the scope of the 5th Mexilhoeira Grande Bearing Cart Race, which will take place on October 1st and 2nd and whose registration must be made by September 30th, via email carts.de [email protected]

The program also includes a cultural tour through the rural interior of the municipality of Portimão, in the Senhora do Verde area, scheduled for the afternoon of that day and with an approximate length of 4 kilometres.

Participants in the walk will have the opportunity to get to know the autochthonous fauna and flora and appreciate the artistic interventions organized by Dancenema and performed by the dance company of this cultural association, by the singer Filipa Sousa, by the violinist João Cunha and by the Animation Group of the Portimonense Philharmonic Society .

In terms of musical animation, which has several moments, the video dance show in digital format “Milho-Rei” deserves special mention, which will be projected on the tower of the Church of Mexilhoeira Grande and which starts at 21:00, in which the Dancenema association portrays the cultural heritage and rural arts and crafts of the municipality of Portimão, through contemporary dance choreographies.

In this choreographic work, which mixes dance and digital art, aspects of ancient and defoliated agriculture are symbolized – a cultural tradition once practiced in the municipality of Portimão, now on the verge of extinction, highlighting the legend of Senhora do Verde, as a protective entity of agriculture. , land and water.

The night will end with an old-fashioned defoliation, which will constitute an intergenerational socializing, in the expectation of finding the 'milho-rei', a red corn cob that, according to tradition, implies giving a hug and a kiss to all participants. on the wheel.

 

 

Promote local flavors and knowledge

Following the projection that this set of events has gained over the years, especially with regard to the promotion of products and producers in the parish, the project “Mexilhoeira Grande – Promotion and dissemination of activities and traditional flavors ”.

As the name indicates, this project aims to create and regulate a common work network and respective identity label to be used in the regional commercial and tourist circuit, as a means of perpetuating and transmitting Mexilhoeirense knowledge, valuing its sustainability within the scope of local productions. and empowering the community to transmit its values ​​to younger people.

Among the various activities planned, there are awareness raising, training and qualification actions for producers, artisans and confectioners, as well as the holding of debates and workshops. like bread, honey, wine, or brandy.

All this programming, organized by the Municipality of Portimão, was produced and implemented by the Museum of Portimão and the Parish Council of Mexilhoeira Grande, in partnership with the local associations Grão de Areia, A Rocha, Sociedade Recreativa Figueirense, Clube de Instrução e Recreio Mexilhoeirense, the Parish of Nossa Senhora da Assunção da Mexilhoeira Grande and the Santa Casa da Misericórdia da Mexilhoeira Grande, in addition to the support of the local community, including individuals and merchants.

 

 

Paintings for a sustainable and resilient future

Also within the scope of the European Heritage Days, it can be seen from the 23rd of September, at the Portimão Museum; the exhibition “Água é Vida”, which brings together paintings by the German artist Gudrun Bartels, on display until the 13th of November.

During the winter months, the painter lives and works in the Algarve and intends, with her paintings, to stimulate reflection on a more sustainable and resilient future, in the context of climate change and environmental degradation.

His work is very influenced by the sea, with ebbs and flows, waves, wind, smells, sounds and the horizon, combining oil and acrylic paints with chalk and pigments, where blue and its hues predominate.
