UAlg will build two new residences and renovate six

Investment of 13 million euros makes total accommodation capacity increase from 552 to 844 beds

The University of Algarve (UAlg) will build two new residences, one on the Penha Campus and the other on the Gambelas Campus, and renovate six, increasing the total accommodation capacity from 552 to 844 beds. 

This is a financing of 13,7 million euros, under the National Plan for Housing in Higher Education (PNAES), which provides for the opening, by mid-2024, of two new residences and the requalification/renovation of six existing facilities, providing 292 new beds for students.

The residence on the Gambelas campus will have 162 beds and the one on the Penha campus will have 125 beds. to what the Sul Informação was able to ascertain, Penha's residence will be next to the former rector's house, facing Avenida Cidade Hayward, and Gambelas' will be in the car park area, close to Horto.

In addition to these, a financing of 4,36 million euros will allow the renovation, until the end of 2023, of the Berlin residences (444.092,00 euros), Ferragial 17 (797.347,00 euros), Ferragial 16 (797.347,00 euros ), Penha (1.029.486,00 euros), Lote E (797.347,00 euros) and Lote O (494.557,00 euros) – places that together guarantee more than 80% of the places currently offered by the University for student accommodation .

In total, the eight projects now approved will involve a total investment of 14,54 million euros, of which 804 thousand will be provided by the University and the remaining amount by the PRR.

 

«With the projects now approved for funding, the University will ensure a firm contribution to reversing the lack of affordable student accommodation in the Algarve region, in particular in the city of Faro», says the educational institution in a press release, adding that for Paulo Águas, rector of UAlg, this is «excellent news for displaced students, since accommodation expenses represent the largest share of their monthly expenses».

«The increase in the offer of accommodation will make higher education more accessible, in particular for the most needy families, contributing to the increase in the qualification of our young people, essential for the construction of a more competitive and resilient region and country», reads up still in the note.

Currently, UAlg makes available, through its Social Action Services, nine university residences in the cities of Faro and Portimão, with the capacity to accommodate 552 students. With this intervention, UAlg will have a total of 844 beds, of which 816 are in Faro and 28 in Portimão.
