Portimão: PSD councilor defends expansion of school support to all students

Mayor defended the principle of "pays who can"

The Portimão City Council will acquire and offer activity books to students in the 1st Cycle of Basic Education, beneficiaries of grade A and B.

The proposal was approved at the council meeting on Wednesday, 17 August, but was opposed by Rui André, councilor for the PSD, who defended the extension of the allocation of school support to all students in the municipality.

The municipality's proposal was approved with 6 votes in favour, including two of the opposition councilors elected by the Portimnão Mais Feliz movement (Luís Carito) and by Chega (Pedro Xavier). Vice-president Álvaro Bila (PS) and councilor Ana Fazenda (PSD) were not present at the meeting.

Mayor Isilda Gomes explained, at the session, that the principle to be taken into account in this support is that "pays who can".

However, social-democratic councilor Rui André stresses, in a statement, that "we are all aware of the great injustices often associated with the attribution of these levels", adding that "at the moment many of the families that do not benefit from this support are experiencing difficulties, aggravated by with the start of another academic year and with all the necessary expenses». In addition, he considers, the situation of families is “aggravated by the high tax burden that the City Council itself charges its citizens”.

In a statement from the PSD of Portimão, Rui André defends “an extension of the allocation of support in school material (activity notebooks) to all students of basic and secondary education in the municipality's public schools, in the next school year, regardless of their positioning in terms of school social action level».

«If the Portimão City Council decided to be on the side of the families of the municipality and accepted this extremely important proposal, particularly in the moment we live in, it would also be contributing to greater equality in access to education and opportunities for learning and academic success. of all students, adds the opposition councilor.
