PAN Algarve was present at the demonstration organized by Empty the Tanks Portugal at Zoomarine, on 3 August, and calls for the park to become a «pioneer in the creation of the first sanctuary in nature for marine animals in Portugal».
In a note sent to the newsrooms, the Party says it is not against Zoomarine, “on the contrary, it recognizes its social and economic value in the region and only calls for a change in its business model”.
«In a sanctuary, Zoomarine could carry out the rehabilitation of animals not only from landfalls in the region, as it is currently doing, but also the rehabilitation of the 28 dolphins and other marine animals that they have in their Sanctuary in nature, as well as others that would be forwarded from similar companies at European level», he adds.
The demonstration organized by Empty the Tanks, which belongs to the international organization “Dolphin Project”, aimed to appeal to spaces like Zoomarine “to stop including circus shows with wild animals in their business model, and the company itself to rehabilitate in Sanctuary their animals in nature with the same trainers and veterinarians as always”.
What they want is for the existing model to be replaced by alternatives that «do not imply keeping animals in captivity, in spaces about two hundred thousand times smaller than the territories they would occupy in their natural habitat, separated from their social, family and cultural structures. ».
On the same note, PAN adds that circus shows with animals can be replaced by other types of exhibitions, which can include 5D virtual reality, holograms, robotics, among countless other possibilities, but keeping part of the space dedicated to an amusement park, as well as the future hotel.
«There is a long way to go and PAN Algarve intends to be on the side of solutions, working together with Zoomarine in the search for sustainable commitments, both economically and environmentally, and in respect for all animals», concludes the Party, stating that already requested a meeting with the space director.
