The work on the Centro de Meios Aéreos de Monchique, worth nearly two million euros, received a prior approval from the Court of Auditors about two weeks ago and “is already progressing”, announced Paulo Alves, president of the Municipality of Monchique, in statements to the Sul Informação.

The mayor explained that “it was necessary to review the values” of the work, since the consequences of the War in Ukraine, with the increase in the price of fuel and construction materials, meant that “the initial values had to be significantly increased” .

Paulo Alves added that this Air Means Centre, which will mainly serve the Western Algarve, is a work that is part of the CILIFO project – Iberian Center for Research and Fight against Forest Fires, which brings together the regions of Alentejo, Algarve and Andalusia.

The mayor of Monchique underlined, in his statements to the Sul Informação, which, in addition to being «a very important investment for the Algarve and for Monchique», the construction of the new Air Transport Center will allow changing the current heliport and making a «reorganization of the urban space» of the town.

According to the mayor, the bus terminal will be able to go to the location of the current heliport, «allowing us to remove this terminal from the center of the village, as it currently stands».

Mayor Paulo Alves said that the work on the new Centro de Meios Aéreos de Monchique, which has already been awarded, should be completed, if all goes as planned, «by the middle of next year».
