European funds finance asbestos removal from schools in 12 Algarve municipalities

More than 58 thousand square meters of asbestos were removed from the coverage of 29 schools in 12 municipalities in the Algarve, under applications approved by the Operational Program CRESC Algarve 2020.

The interventions in question were carried out in 2020 and 2021 and represented “a total eligible investment of 3,5 million euros, 100% co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF)”, according to the Regional Coordination and Development Commission (CCDR). ) of the Algarve.

The work to remove this potentially carcinogenic material was carried out in 2nd and 3rd cycle teaching establishments, “following the agreement established with the Government, which allowed access to European Funds managed in the region for the removal of coverings made up of plates and accessories fiber cement with asbestos'.

«Adding together two broader requalification projects, in which the removal of asbestos is also planned, these interventions will improve the operating conditions in 31 schools in the Algarve, aiming to eliminate potentially harmful factors for human health and the environment associated with the existence of materials with asbestos in its composition», concluded the Algarve CCDR.
