Lack of material “runs aground” video surveillance in Praia da Rocha

PSD councilors criticize alleged lack of articulation between security forces and the City Council

The Praia da Rocha video surveillance system should already be in operation, but the company that was hired to install it has not been able to do so until now, because "it is still waiting for the material", he revealed to Sul Informação Isilda Gomes, mayor of Portimão.

The mayor of Portimão confesses that the perspective of the Chamber, after signing the contract with the company to install this system, about a month ago, was «to have video surveillance working as early as August».

However, “there are still 32 cameras to be assembled”, a problem that is “on the company's side”, which has faced difficulties in acquiring the necessary material from suppliers.

The mayor, elected by the PS, believes that it will still be possible to have the system working «this summer» and even points to the future: «We want to launch a new tender as soon as possible to extend the video surveillance network to the historic area of city" of Portimão.

The delay in installing video surveillance in Praia da Rocha was one of the “unfulfilled promises” by the executive lamented by PSD councilors, Rui André and Ana Fazenda, in Portimão, after an extraordinary Chamber Meeting attended by PSP representatives. , GNR and the National Maritime Authority, carried out at the request of the elected opposition.

This meeting came after more riots involving tourists in the bars area of Praia da Rocha, repeating the scenes of destruction and beatings that had already occurred there last June.

However, the main criticisms of the Social Democrats relate to an alleged lack of articulation between the Chamber and the different security forces. They also criticize issues that, in the view of the main opposition party, hamper the work of the latter.

«In the opinion of those elected by the PSD, the Portimão City Council must assume its leading role and articulation with the security forces, in order to overcome some problems that create serious constraints to the population», say Rui André and Ana Fazenda in a note. of press.

The two opposition councilors demand "greater coordination between the municipality and the security forces", considering that the "traffic alterations without the opinion of the Municipal Traffic Commission" and the fact that the Municipal Safety Commission has not met for more than two years are examples of situations that «only contribute to the discrediting of the political measures of this executive».

On the part of Isilda Gomes, who did not even participate in that Chamber meeting because she was sick with Covid-19, comes the guarantee that the articulation with the security forces «is the best».

“We talk all the time. We are constantly in contact, we have a very close connection with all the security forces», assured the Socialist mayor.

“Some people think that problems are solved in meetings. But it's not like that. Whenever there is a problem, we seek to resolve it on the spot, over the phone. Until today, I have always had the best response of all the security forces”, added Isilda Gomes.

Despite talking about a «chronic lack of human resources», the PSD councilors do not doubt that «Portimão is today a municipality that has in its security forces the guarantee of the necessary tranquility».

«Unfortunately, this effort is often made by the selflessness and dedication of professionals, as the security forces operating in this territory have some needs that urgently need to be overcome», they defend.

In addition to the lack of operatives, «the facilities are still not adequate for their needs, as reported at this meeting».

“In the case of the GNR, adjustments to the post are necessary for a better reception of citizens, for example with a victim support room, sanitary facilities and reception/reception areas, as well as a waiting room”, stress the Social Democrat councilors. Rui André and Ana Fazenda.

As for the PSP, "although it is currently undergoing works to improve its facilities», it is expected that this intervention will not provide an «answer to the main problems, so the Portimão Chamber is called upon to echo these needs with the Government», they say.

Another issue raised by Rui André and Ana Fazenda is related to the lack of «good coexistence between bars in tourist areas and residents, with constant complaints about noise».

A problem that Isilda Gomes recognizes exists, but that she guarantees that it is already being “attacked”.

«There have already been bars that have been notified to reduce opening hours, due to excess decibels», guaranteed the mayor of Portimão.

“We have noise meters and we know who abuses it. If that happens, we will reduce the opening hours of the establishments”, he said, adding that the previous week had been “approved by the Chamber of Deputies a proposal to reduce the hours of a bar to midnight”, precisely due to excessive noise.

On the part of the PSD, whose councilors in Portimão state their «joy at the holding of this meeting» with the presence of representatives of the forces of authority, there is still the promise of availability «for the necessary political decisions and construction of solutions leading to a city still safer, where citizens, tourists and local businesses can feel safe'.
