CHUA recorded 175.820 emergency episodes in the first half of the year alone

An increase in activity of 42,8% compared to the same period in 2021

The Algarve University Hospital Center (RAIN) started the year with an increase in assistance activity. 

«In the first semester alone, there were 175.820 episodes of urgency, representing, on average, 971 daily visits in the different types of the ten emergency services provided by the CHUA», says the hospital in a note sent to newsrooms. 

The numbers thus represent an increase in activity of 42,8% compared to the same period in 2021, translating into 291 more emergency calls per day.

Although the increase occurred in all units, the most expressive was observed in Pediatric emergencies, with an increase of 81,6% compared to the same period of the previous year. Basic Emergency Services (in Lagos, Albufeira, Loulé and Vila Real de Santo António) also registered a very substantial increase, in the order of 63%.

Right after emergencies, the surgical area was, according to CHUA, the one that registered the greatest increase with a total of 8.816 surgeries, which represents an increase of 21,3% compared to the first half of 2021.

Also with regard to the activity of external consultations, there was an increase of 2,8% compared to 2021, with a total of 162.709 consultations carried out. Non-medical consultations, such as nursing, nutrition and psychology consultations, registered a growth of almost 5%, corresponding to 1.130 out of a total of 25.563 consultations.

Regarding the list of candidates for surgery, there was a decrease both in situations with maximum guaranteed response times exhausted (3%), and in situations with a waiting time of more than 1 year (11%). 

«In parallel with the increase in surgeries and consultations, it was also possible to increase the internalization of the response with regard to complementary means of diagnosis and therapy, reducing the number of tests performed abroad by 32%. were carried out in RAIN 116.605 more exams than in the same period of the previous year, in a total of 2.406.600 exams.

In Day Hospitals, 29.180 sessions were also held, which represents an increase of 10,9% compared to the first half of the previous year.

As for hospital admissions, 15.600 patients were discharged in the first semester (an increase of 2,8%) and in the area of ​​Home Hospitalization, whose scope was extended to some Algarve homes in March this year, there were 176 admissions, corresponding to a activity increase of 17,3%.
