Aljezur, Lagos and Vila do Bispo refuse to raise water prices

Algarve municipalities say they do not understand why they are on the list of municipalities supplied by critical systems

There will be no “tariff increase” for domestic water users in the municipalities of Aljezur, Lagos and Vila do Bispo, the three municipalities announced today, Friday.

In a joint communiqué, under the banner of the association Terras do Infante, which brings together the Chambers of Aljezur, Lagos and Vila do Bispo, the municipalities made public their decision not to increase the price of water, as recommended by the Government, as they considered that this “would only increase the cost of living for each household”.

Yesterday, Thursday, the 25th, both the mayor of Aljezur and the vice-president of the municipality of Lagos had already shown themselves unwilling to comply with the recommendation made by the ministers of Environment and Agriculture, after another meeting of the Permanent Commission for the Prevention, Monitoring and Follow-up of Drought.

Today, and already after a meeting between the three executives, the board of directors of Terras do Infante not only gives an account of the refusal to increase the price of water for large consumers (above the 3rd tier, that is, 15m3 per month), as they say they do not understand «how was it possible for the Government to include the municipalities of Aljezur, Lagos and Vila do Bispo in a list of 43 municipalities supplied by critical systems».

"We remind the Government that these three municipalities are part of the Multi-municipal Supply System of the Águas do Algarve company, which serves the entire region as a single system for its 16 municipalities", reads the statement, signed by Hugo Pereira, Mayor of Lagos, which also presides over Terras do Infante.

«We consider that the problem in question is not treated, mitigated or resolved with single and stray measures, but in an integrated, serious and responsible way at the national level», they add.

In the territory of Terras do Infante, they say, this work has already begun.

«The municipalities of Aljezur, Lagos and Vila do Bispo have taken various measures, known to their populations, in order to mitigate the effects of the hydrological drought in their municipalities, in the region and in the country, with positive results» , illustrate.

“Because the entire country has a scenario of severe or extreme drought, it is important that each one of us increasingly promotes the rational use of this scarce good that belongs to everyone”, conclude the three municipalities.
