Regatta between Lagos and Palos de la Frontera celebrated Portuguese and Spanish Discoveries

From the 8th to the 10th of July

The history of Portugal and Spain was celebrated in yet another edition of the Regatta dos Portos dos Descobrimentos, which departed Lagos on Friday, July 8, and ended on Sunday in Palos de la Frontera.

This sailing event «is one of the most important initiatives to celebrate its history linked to the period of Portuguese and Spanish maritime Discoveries», according to the Lagos Chamber.

Altogether, twenty-nine teams participated in this regatta. The Spanish vessel Sayonara Light was the winner of the regatta, having arrived in Mazagón around 12:21 on Sunday.

«The return of the Porto dos Descobrimentos Regatta after two years of suspension due to the pandemic crisis was an important moment that further strengthened relations between the two cities whose twinning act took place on October 27 (St Gonçalo Day) 1992 », according to the Lagos Chamber.

At the time, the two municipalities “sealed the commitment to maintain ties of cooperation and exchange in various areas, also developing the spirit of solidarity, peace and prosperity, with this regatta being a prominent initiative that links the two places”.

The regatta returns in 2023, this time departing from Palos de la Frontera and arriving in Lagos.
