PSD fears closure of Portimão Maternity and demands measures to avoid it

Concerned about the "absence of solutions to the problem"

PSD Algarve believes that the Government will be forced to close the Portimão Maternity Hospital, due to the “absence of solutions to the problem” and the fact that it is a “structural” problem, and requires measures “much more than one-off measures” to avoid this outcome.

In a press release released today, the 11th of July, the Social Democrats recall that the Portimão Maternity Hospital «has been closed thirteen of the last thirty days», a situation they call «of the greatest seriousness, without any parallel», which «threatens to lead to the Portimão maternity hospital to a definitive closure decision'.

“The lack of service on so many occasions underlines how structural the problem is, which does not result from periods of vacation for doctors or peak activity, but from the shortage of pediatricians, which jeopardizes the care of pregnant women and babies, now forced to travel great distances to deliver babies", claims the main opposition party.

“In addition, because the functioning of the pediatric emergency is also compromised, children who need urgent care also need to go to Faro», he adds.

In the view of Cristóvão Norte, president of PSD Algarve, «the absence of solutions to the problem will lead to the closure of the Portimão maternity hospital, within the scope of the restructuring that the [Health] minister announced. This is very serious.

“As the government cannot solve the problem, it begins to think about closing. It is the policy of the fait accompli. They will say that births have decreased – it is natural, it is often closed and pregnant women avoid planning their pregnancy for this maternity hospital – and then they will make the decision as normal as possible. We will not leave him and we are attentive to demand responsibilities», claims Cristóvão Norte.

The social democrat stresses that «the health problem in the Algarve is structural and has many causes, some of them specific to the region, such as housing prices, for example. To solve it, much more than one-off measures is needed. It is necessary to change careers, defeat corporatism in terms of number of vacancies and training».

Carlos Martins, president of PSD Portimão, considers, for his part, that «the objective must be to find solutions to maintain motherhood and never look for the problem, easy, to dare to think about closing the motherhood».

«It is in the hands of the Government, of a Minister with four years of knowledge of the sector and of this reality, to find solutions for the entire region of the Western Algarve. The PSD, also in Portimão, will be convinced on the side of motherhood life and the lives that we want to start here». he concluded.
