A 20-year-old man was arrested yesterday, July 20, in Olhão, suspected of being the author of thefts and robberies of the elderly, in an action by the Criminal Investigation Nucleus (NIC) of Faro of the GNR.

The police investigation of theft crimes, which lasted «about three months», found that the assailant «chose victims who resided in isolated areas of some municipalities in the Algarve region». He was eventually detained by the NIC of the GNR in compliance with an arrest warrant.

According to the GNR, the young man is now “indicted for seven robberies, using violence, against the elderly”. These robberies were mainly aimed at stealing «gold and cash items», as well as stealing «non-precious metals» and carob beans.

The detainee was made a defendant and will be presented to the Judicial Court of Faro, for the application of coercive measures.
